Would PCGS grade 09 S VDB MS64 red with carbon mark on coin?

Looking at 1909 S VDB has grade from PCGS MS64 red. Coin has small carbon mark on coin. Just wondering if I should cancel my bid for this coin, or grade stands with carbon mark.
Still have few days to cancel bid, do not plan on paying top $$ for this coin.

I have seen PCGS MS RD coins with carbon spots, but they get dinged in the market. Unless you need this for a registry set or something, I think you could find better examples...imo.

 

Not a coin I would buy from an image.
It's probably right for the grade but there are better out there.

 

I just don't have the pocketbook or trust to spend that much on a coin from a stranger on an internet. I like them handed to me from a dealer I'm looking in the eye with a real store front and a trusted reputation.

 

Not looking to pay top $ for this coin. If PCGS grade is legit coin worth around $4K. Looking to buy at discounted PCGS MS64 red price.

Woulld be long term hold, do not plan on selling any of my coins till retirement 20 years from now.
Do own few other 09 s VDB's ms 64's with out any carbon spots.

you have to understand just because a coin is in a slab doesnt mean anything buy the coin and not the slab.

 

If the spot bothers you enough to mention it now, chances are it will bother you going forward.

This coin is common enough that I would wait for a better example.

Also, the auction worries me as it doesn't state a return policy.

The coin also appears to be hazing up on the lower obverse.

I would PASS. Cheap coins are (generally) cheap for a reason.

Yes, PCGS will slab a spotted coin 64, 65, (66 and 67 in some cases, which I would not, but they may have spotted after the slabbing)


Recently, slabbed Lincolns have turned into a crapshoot....Ebay bidders have set some CRAZY prices out there , so it is very unpredictable, but I would suspect no bargains to be had.

Normally, you would buy the coin, not the holder, but Ebay bidders have been known to ignore all logic, lol

 

the value on the Graysheet is around 3,200 in MS-64

IMO I do not think that coin is a 64. It is has bad eye appeal for a 64

 

Again from pics it's hard to tell. I can see the 64 but not the RD, maybe an RB

The bid is now too high to purchase the coin. The carbon spot should cause a decent hit agaisnt greysheet, which doesn't seem to be happening. I would pass on this.

The way I would get another high end lincoln is to find a dealer you trust who attends many shows or has a good network of other dealers. Tell him exactly what you want. I bet you will end up with the exact 09 s vdb you want within a short time at a resonable price. You will also get an extra opinion as to whether you should buy a particular coin.

This is exactly how I got my 09 s vdb, and I'm pleased with how it turned out. I'm sure there are dealers on this board who will help you out.

The color looks mellowed (not fully "RD"), and in the blown up version of the obverse image I can see haze/discoloration on the surfaces.

I'd avoid it and wait until you can find a nicer one in a non-auction setting. They aren't really very rare and turn up quite frequently. Patience will reward you.

Yes. No evidence of cleaning.

Maybe. Spot could have developed later. It happens.
As does toning from RD to RB.
The slabs aren't perfect.
Best way to get a clue is look it up on the PCGS site, and see if they include the slabbing date.

I'd pass on this one.
It's offered oftn enough that a better one will come along shortly.
If you buy a coin with a problem, you'll always have a coin with a problem.
