I was wondering what folks think this bill should be graded at?

Thanks......also can anyone provide tips on how I can prevent the bleed thru when scanning so that the color on the bill is accurate without the back of the note showing thru?

my scanner has an option to either turnon or turn off a backlight ... might check to see if yours has one too.

    oh - and awsome note!!

You could also try putting a few sheets of paper on top of the note while scanning. That should prevent the bleed.

Can you expand on why you say that Urbanchemist?

I saw in another thread just recently, i think it was in the open section ... a peep had posted an image of an Iraqi note .. i have scanned alot of Iraqi notes for my site, but let me tell you, this picture was 1000% better then my scans... i think what he did was used a black backer instead of a white... i am going to try a black backer next time i scan :)

That would make total sense. A white backing (or the cover of the scanner) is going to reflect any light that bleeds through the note back towards the light source...and the scanning head.
Black cards or black material will absorb that light and reflect back much less.
You can get black on black matte board or foam board at hobby or arts & crafts shops.

A neat trick is to go to a fabric store and get a yard of black velour or black velvet cloth. (The cloth is probably $4-6 a yard. Get a piece of cardboard, foam board, show card or other stiff material that you can curt and trim it to the size of your scanning bed.
Cut off a chunk of the fabric the size of the stiff board and spray glue it onto on side of the board.
No light will bounce back off of the velour.

If you look at the bigger picture on the note you will find a spot on the upper edge and one corner looks to have been folded in the past. XF is where the guy put it that I had purchased it from, I just wanted to verify it.

I saw the corner fold and the spotting. There're a couple of little spots on the reverse as well.
Without holding the note and feeling the paper it's hard to tell it's crispness, but IMHO the note should grade better than XF.
Technically, for it to be XF there would be some sort of center fold. I don't see any in the pix.
So, conservatively, bottom grade would be an AU. If the paper is crisp and snappy, It could grade higher.

Neil is correct! Thatnote may have signs of handling that are not visibile when scanned.
The corner fold and water stains are apparent. The upper right hand side is usually an area that shows handling via tellers! Check it out closely and compare the feel of the paper on all corners and both sides. A minor detraction is the tight upper margin as well. This can and does affect the note.

    XF-AU

I went to school and recieved my Architecture degree... and with that i ahve lots of 'stuff' around that i used to make presentation boards and models out of. I found some black chip-board that i had left over. Let me tell you.. the difference is ... well, black and white. I scanned a note from Uzbekistan with the plain white backing of my scanner lid, and as expected the image was a bit washed out. I then placed the black chipboard behind the notes ... the difference is dramatic!!! the colors are more vibrant, the white doesnt bleach the rest of the image..... I certainly wont make another scan without it now! I also must now go back and re-scan alot of my notes.. especially Iraq ... my Iraq notes were all so washed out from the lithograph and all the white ....

    WoW!!!

If any of you guys have ever noticed..all my scans have a black background...no light refraction/reflection..better scans

    Cheers..
