I got this Morgan dollar the other day and am having a difficult time figuring out if real or fake. Tidbits about the coin are the weight comes in good. I've View attachment 981659 View attachment 981661 acid tested it which checks out. Non magnetic. Have not measured diameter. Only thing throwing me off is the mint mark. It just looks like a square. Could it be an error? Let me know your thoughts!! Oh and someone had the name Johnny engraved across face of it. Check out the pics!

You need to show both sides, but from what I can see, I think that it is real.

Or a simple Die Chip. Not sure if Morgans have RPM listings.

I'll do some research into S minted morgans with RPM like that.

    Is it a 1878 S?

Appears to be the 1878 S double posted. No RPM listed on Variety Vista for a 1878 S. Your dollar appears to have taken damage to the mm area. Or a minor die chip.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm fairly new to coin collecting and got it from someone at work. Wasn't quite sure what to think of it. The name engraved on the front is a little let down but overall pretty cool if that's what it is.

Yes it is. Makes you wonder who had it and what all it has bought over the years!

What's an acid test for silver dollars? I've heard of the Ken Kesey acid tests of the 60s, but I don't think it had anything to do with silver dollars!:wacky:

NEVER do an acid test on coins that you think may have numismatic value. If it's done directly on the coin, the acid will leave a discolored spot and if it's rubbed against a stone, it will leave scratches. Either of these will reduce the value.

On low value coins, it's not such a big deal, but since many new collectors don't know which coins are low value, it's best to err on side of caution and NOT do an acid test on gold and silver coins

It is a pretty beat up coin and it had someone's name engraved across face of it so figured was just worth silver value anyways. Used a stone which did leave a small scratch put can't really tell it from all the other little dings.

I'm leaning towards it being a fake. When you compare the areas of a known real Morgan to the OPs, the lettering just doesn't look correct, even for a heavily circulated coin that has taken lots of hits.

    Certified coin

The letters just don't seem correct.
At least it's worth melt value or a nice conversational piece.
