I think the point of view here may be how much you can afford for it. Certainly, if I lived in a country where the local currency did not depend on dollar fluctuations, I could within my budget buy one with better eye appeal or at least better conservation. Mine, acquired here in Sao Paulo, Brazil about 8 years ago, came out for the trifle of about 400 reais. At the time, about 150 dollars. It is really ugly, but I know I could hardly get much better within my budget at that time. If something better comes along, and of course I can afford it, I will replace it.

It is a wonderful piece of History! First Silver coin of Rome. Well done. You HAVE it, no rush to “upgrade”. You already touch that interesting timeline. Great coin and congrats!

Well, as Paul Harvey might have said, for the rest of the story. I purchased this coin with my eyes wide open. I did my research, and I checked all the same pricing you have all pointed to. The seller advertised that this coin was ex. jewelry mount with damage from the mounting. After looking at the "damage", I made an offer considerably below the asking price. It was accepted.

Now, my reason for asking the question in this thread, was by how much less, percentage wise, do you think the "damage" affects the marked value of this coin? Also how does this revelation change your willingness to buy such a coin, Here is the coin once again with a side view of the damage:

Man O man, I was waiting for the twist! It really doesn't effect the desirability of the coin for me much at all. The obverese and reverse still look excellent... Though, classless as it be, I'm interested in knowing how much you paid!?!!

Well done and NICE, JW! Yup, I would had gone for it myself! Like I said to @Multatuli , you have an awesome piece of Rome’s History!

Hmmm... price. I will think on that. Neat conundrum. AND, knowing YOU... you got an incredible deal!

As long as the Edge modifications weren't hiding something sinister.. I'd be all for it!
In fact knowing some material was removed from edges my put my mind at ease about the low weight.
Overall the ex jewelry thing wouldn't bother me much as long as the coin itself was desireable. You'd better believe I'd still use that as a negotiating tactic though :)

I don't mind. If I wasn't the owner I would want to know. So total was slightly more than $250.

Yea, it doesn't effect what how I'd personally value the coin @Bing, except it would effect what I'd be willing to pay due to resale value (i.e. I would expect others to have a different view).

I know I am sometimes an outlier with how I collect, as I don't so much care about scratches and graffiti. While that's useful for me (I essentially get coins I want for less than you'd expect to pay), I'm aware that it does bother others, therefore the price they would be willing to pay, and the price I would be willing to pay.

It's still a emblematic and great coin, Bing! At least for me. I believe, IMO that was a good deal. It's overall a lot prettier than mine.
