It's like this, the dealer didn't give me any explanation of why he thought it wasn't a broad strike quarter. You didn't give me an explanation of why it was. That's fine, but I wish you had gone a little further, like Treashunt did, to tell me your reasoning. I'm not against what you said, but explaining it would have helped this newbie understand better.

I love your quarter, and your 2nd FE purchase! Were you able to clean the first FE satisfactorily, and if so, what method did you end up using?

I'm a learning girl, so bear with me. The more I read here, the more I'm ready to transition from buying silver BU and proofs to older coinage. Fascinating. I'm going to subscribe to ANA (platinum) right now to further enlighten myself. (I read the sample issue yesterday, cover to cover.)

Any other tips as far as the best ways to learn? Besides reading the posts here of course. ;)

Sounds like you are really into collecting! Good to hear. No, I haven't worked on the FE yet, because I need to experiment first on some old coins to get used to the process. I'm still learning on that part. But I'm likely to use some acetone and rinse with distilled water.

The best way to learn besides reading on this forum is to buy the books, l the red book, which should be your first purchase. Then as you get into it you might decide to focus on a particular coin. I have books on Morgans, Washington quarters, and Walking Liberties because those are coins I'm interested in. Then I later picked up books on grading, including my latest purchase, the Photograde picture book. Now I'm waiting for someone to put out a book on cleaning and conserving coins!

Hope to see more of you!

Thanks for the tips... I've had a red book for years (since 2012) and it's always been a good starting point reference for me. Grading is exactly what I'd like to learn next... and I've been trying to think what coin I might like to focus on collecting first! I've decided to collect some Libertads (just bought a few '80s coins) but I'd like to focus on a US coin... just need to figure out WHAT. :) I was just looking at the Summer Seminars in Colorado Springs (ANA) and I would love to attend one of those! Not totally impossible for me as I live in south central KS, so it wouldn't be too far to go, just need to find the time!

And if you haven't already, Google Kansas coin clubs and you will also find coins shows. These are also good learning experiences, You learn quickly how much money you need to buy good coins!
