I am very interested in starting a collection of Silver Dollar size Crowns/Coins. I would appreciate it very much if someone can point me in the right direction, (in addition to eBay), to search for these coins. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide. Also, is there a book that I can purchase on this topic?

Heritage Weekly World Coin auctions often have a selection of these and many are certified by the main third party graders.

It really depends on what you want to collect, where your interests are, and what your pocketbook allows. If you have deep pockets, like jgenn suggested, there are any number of auction houses that sell high quality, authenticated items.

If, on the other hand, you are interested in just finding large silver coins that have more variety than Morgan and Peace dollars, then I highly recommend that you start with your local coin shop or local coin shows. Usually you will be able to find a dealer that has a batch of foreign coins that they don't care much about and are willing to sell at or near bullion value. Most of those will be common coins, but it is a great way to get some cool looking pieces from all over the world with relatively low risk. After you find out what you like (and after you have picked up a book like a Krause catalog) you can start looking for the pricier ones. I still find it amazing that I can own large silver foreign coins that have attractive designs in high circulated or low uncirculated grades and with mintages lower than a 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent for only $100 or so.

Good suggestions above. It really all depends on how deep your diving and how much you want to invest. Thaler size coins can get pricey, especially in high grades. I really like ma-shops.com. It is made of mostly European dealers. You can do a lot of window shopping before you buy.

Krause issued a catalogue with these in mind. "Standard Catalog of
World Crowns and Thalers". It's two inches thick!! Several thousand
pieces listed along with prices. Not knowing your budget, you should
be able to find some at a mid-sized show (50+ tables) for under $50.
Back in the 80's I found enough of these to fill 4 double row boxes.
They were cheaper than Morgan dollars for the same grade and many
of them were older. Back to the catalog, probably find one on Amazon
    or E-Bay.

Check out this blog titled "My Collection of World Silver Crown Sized Coins".

It's not a selling site, just a really good place to get a handle on the world of crowns.

First of all you should set up your budget as it's the decisive factor. Then you should decide what you want.By all means you'd better specialize and avoid being a chaotic world crowns collector!I have a variety of large crowns ,all bought at very good prices because i'm always looking to make great deals and not just buy bullion coins, but i regret not trying to dedicate myself to a particular type of coin and now it's a bit late.I would definitely start a Mansfeld or Wildman talers collection! In your case you need to get used to the coins and learn how to spot fakes and how to make the difference between a good deal and a bad one.Use coinarchives, acsearch, krause catalogue, the silver benelux, lamoneta, anything that's related to your desired type of coin, to get more knowledge.Ma-shops is great for buying, but good coins get sold very quickly and there's plenty overpriced pieces too.Ebay can be tricky as there are many good fakes and a novice would easily fall into a trap! You can also search for coin auctions on Numista,Sixbid,Auex.de,Deamoneta,Biddr and there's probably others too.My last advice is to buy the best quality you can afford, avoid problem items, unless they're very rare, and learn as much as you can about the coins you'll decide to collect.Good luck and looking forward to see your coins!

I feel US coins are hugely overpriced with collectors paying many $$$$$ for coins with a fairly large population when compared to something from GB, continental Europe, Latin America or even Imperial Russia. Apart from some very desirable crowns, you should be able to buy a decent crown for a fraction of he price of a comparable Morgan. Some Talers and desirable earlier Roubles, on the other hand, could prove very expensive.

Better to stick to slabbed coins if you aren't confident of your own expertise in recognizing a fake. Unfortunately eBay is full of fakes....you just have to look at the offerings for 1934 Crowns to realise how many fakes are available ;).

Also look at the earlier thread relating to large silver coins for some good suggestions:

And if you decide to cross over to the dark side and take a peek at ancients, there are always the impressive Tetradrachms from 2000+ years ago :D.

    Happy hunting.
