How good is CoinTalk compared to the TPGs? Let's find out! Over the next several months, I'll be posting a continuous stream of Guess the Grade threads. I will be using photos from the Heritage auction archives (please do not cheat!).

All you have to do is guess the grade! I will be attaching a poll to each thread. Please select the grade that you think best represents the coin (to avoid bias, please select your grade before viewing the rest of the thread).

Also feel free to post your opinions about the coin, and it would be most educational if you could explain why you chose the grade you did.

In order to give everyone time to respond, I'll reveal the grade Wednesday evening

Around Christmas, I will tally up the results and see how we did. This thread is an offshoot of a recent thread where I compared CT grading to the TPG, seen here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-good-is-cointalk-at-grading.343417/

We're going to cover a wide range of material, and some of it may be out of your wheelhouse. However, if you are a confident grader, you should be able to accurately grade almost any coin.

Here are two different sets of pictures of the same coin, both offered by Heritage.

Everyone needs to vote in the poll! If you don't vote in the poll, your grades won't count - currently, nobody has selected 65!

I screwed up. I voted 64 in the poll. Should have been 65.

    Voted 67, but after longer examination I think it's a 66.

I picked 66. Very little in the way of hits on the coin.

I find the blemishes on the cheek and neck distracting...64.

This is close to a 67, IMO. Very tough date in high grade like this. I voted 66.

I voted 64 mainly based on the close-up photos. I also thought that it being a better date would mean more conservative grading. The full slab shot makes the cheek look nicer. I'd guess the slab grade is likely higher, but I wouldn't be a fan of the coin overall based on whatever is on the cheek (even if it isn't hits) and what looks like hazing on the reverse (around "States").

I said 64. That mark on the cheek is a major focus in my opinion. Otherwise easy 65

I'm at 66. Not a great 66, but still 66. The spottiness on the picture without the slab is exaggerated when you compare with the other picture. Luster is really good, fields and cheek have no hits. Tip of bust is lightly scuffed, but that's permissible at this grade.

Having both sets of pictures is informative. Seeing the slab label helps "calibrate" what we're looking at on the rest of the coin, since we know what the labels look like.

My first thought was MS64, too, but she’s better than that. I voted MS65. Unfortunately, the pictures don’t show the luster very well.

I think the TPGs are usually more lenient with “better dates” or key dates and stricter with common years.

Obverse-64, reverse is very nice -66/67.
Averages out to 65+. Morgans aren't as hard to grade for most....easier than the previous ones due to population, and interest. JMO.

Edit: old grading standards would be 64 I'm guessing.

Slab photos bumped me up to 66 from 65. Interesting how things look different depending on magnification.
