I need to share this with someone and you guys are the only folks I know who may appreciate this. I just got my order in the mail of Custom Antiqued Silver Coins & Rounds by an eBay seller called “5ozSilver” and am completely blown away by their beauty. His Custom Antiquing brings out SO much of the artwork detail on these coins and gives it a depth that it never had before.

The Story: I was looking for something or other on eBay and came across this guy selling Custom Antiqued Coins & Rounds which he had Antiqued himself with his own method. I was curious and started browsing through some of what he was selling and thought I would give him a try. I really liked his work and we had a lot of good correspondence and I got the feeling that he was trustworthy. Yes, I could have been terribly wrong, but I’m usually pretty on target with my gut feelings about people. So I took a chance and mailed him some of my own coins and rounds to custom Antique for me for very reasonable prices. He sent me pictures of what they looked like before shipping them back to me but those pictures did not at all capture their beauty in person. They look SO much better than the pictures.

I feel like I’ve discovered this hidden treasure and want to share my find with others - “Hey everyone, look what I found! This is great!”

If you’re a Silver collector like me (as opposed to a Silver Investor) this is a nice way to enhance some of your collection. The depth that is added to the artwork of a Silver coin or round with this custom Antiquing is incredible and doesn’t compare to the mass produced antiqued rounds that mints sometimes issue. The mint-produced ones pale in comparison to these. It comes down to the difference between art that is mass produced VS hand-made. Some things benefit so much more from a human touch and attention to detail.

And speaking of attention to detail, he packages things very carefully when mailing them. He packs each coin/round in a brand new Air-Tite Brand capsule and packages them well so they are protected in shipping (I don’t know about you, but I hate getting broken or damaged things in the mail because someone couldn’t take the time or effort to package it well. I’ve even gotten coins and rounds in broken capsules from APMEX! It can be so frustrating.)

You would think I’m related to this guy or get commissions or something, or have some other conflict of interest. But I’m not and don’t – I’m not related to him, I don’t get commissions, I have no conflict of interest and I have never met or even spoken to him on the phone. I just like to share when I’ve found something good that I think others may like. And when someone does good work and I have a good experience with them, I like recommending them to others. (He has not actually asked me to recommend him to others, I’m doing this on my own.)

Below are pictures of the coins and rounds I sent to him that he Antiqued and then sent back to me. But again, the pictures do NOT AT ALL do these justice. You know how hard Silver is to photograph? Well, same goes for Antiqued Silver. It looks SO much better in person.

If you do check out “5ozSilver” on eBay and buy someone from him or decide to trust him with your coins/rounds, you can tell him you heard about him from someone on CT. You don’t have to say it was me, I don’t get any benefit from it, I just think people should know that word of mouth gets around and when you do good work people notice and tell others.

Here’s his store on eBay and then following are the pictures he took (I have a bad camera on my phone, his pics are better than the ones I tried taking myself).

Many of my silver medals are 19th & early 20th century originals from the Paris Mint. Some of my more modern silver medals were produced by private mints in the US during the 60's, 70's & 80's. In almost every instance, fewer than 1,000, most fewer than 500, of these original designs were made. Here are a couple of my favorites, one from France and one from the US.

I also have some American-made medals that were produced in, both, silver and antique silver, and I have to say that they look much better than your specimens. This is just my opinion, but "antiquing" coins or medals in the fashion you have shown makes them look like they have been "whizzed".

Thanks for showing them to us.

Those are beautiful medals you have.

I started collecting silver in the past 4 years so I don't have any antique stuff to show off like you do.

In terms of Antiquing, I'm referring to Modern coins and rounds that aren't produced in an Antique finish by their respective mints. This is a way of getting them "Antiqued".

Again, they look much better in person than in the pictures. And they don't at all look "Whizzed" in person.

If you don't like my newly Antique finished rounds you are of course entitled to your opinion. I just don't know why you would criticize and throw shade on my "New Toy" that I'm clearly enthusiastic about. :( Ouch :(

Did you pay a premium for the washed/rubbed look?
Personally, I don't see how the washed/rubbed look adds anything to that modern bullion. I wouldn't pay anything extra for that look.

    Enjoy your collections.

That is why I said, "This is just my opinion..." and thanked you for sharing them with us. There is no reason for you to feel bad. If you like them, that is all that matters.

Interestingly, there is another relatively new member who has been exchanging private messages with me because he read some of my posts about French medals, and he has become thoroughly enchanted with the idea of collecting silver and gilt-silver medals. That's just the way things are.

    I hear you.

I suppose there are other ways of saying your opinion and when someone excitedly says to me, "Hey, how do you like my new ______"? I wouldn't respond by saying, "Thanks for showing it to us. It looks whizzed. I have ones that look much better than yours. That's just my opinion."

You and the other guy here really made me feel bad. If you think my new toy is ugly, you don't have to say anything. But don't announce that you think it's butt ugly to the whole playground. :(

And adding "that's just my opinion" or "Thanks for showing them to us" doesn't help alleviate the sting.

You asked a question in a public forum.
It would be a disservice to you not to reply w/ an honest response. OTOH, I'm a firm believer in collecting whatever you want. If you enjoy the look that's all that matters.

    Enjoy

You're just going to have to learn to accept the fact that when you post something on the forums, it doesn't matter what it is, you are going to get comments, negative, positive or indifferent. You opened the door for it, and if you can't accept the negative with the positive, then you have a problem. You can accept my opinion for what it is or disregard my opinion. It doesn't matter, but if you resent my opinion, well, that is another story.

I did not ask a question.

I posted pictures of my new toys and shared where people can get them if they like them.

You're right. I did open the door for it. I guess I didn't expect the negative and it threw me.

    No resentment. No worries.

You don't have to ask a question. All you have to do is say, "Hey! Look at this!"

    ". . . But don't announce that you think it's butt ugly to the whole playground. . . :( "

No one wrote your coins are ugly much less butt ugly.
Having a thin skin in a public forum is not a good thing.
Many CoinTalk users have been around for a while and have formed opinions based on experience and having many encounters w/ other CT users. If you like your bullion that's the important thing. You asked others' what they think of your bullion opinion and they responded.

You could reframe this message thread by telling yourself some guys in CT don't like my coins and I don't like their statements. I'll look for another coin forum.

    Enjoy your bullion.

I'm thin skinned and should find another coin forum because you failed to be diplomatic. Talk about face palm...

JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

I like all the "antiqued" medals you posted (except for the Britannia). I think some coins look better shiny. But the new "Molon Labe" ones are surely very good candidates for "antiquing." Thanks for sharing.

Hang in there @Good Cents, we should all collect what we like. I do like the look of some antiqued finished pieces, but some......ehhh.
    Just my opinion.

    Thank you John.

I REALLY like that lion piece in your handle. What is it? Can you post a larger picture of it? I see there are words on it but can't make them out.
