Well I bought 6 coins all added at 46$ I asked him if I got a variety of stuff will you give me a deal he said yes so he gave it to me for 35 all together.
This is my very first flying eagle cent. And I'm excited!! The variety is it's the large letter variety. Too me it's not in such terrible shape. Could be alot worse. But I'm loving it! What you guys think?? CM190810-151555001.jpg CM190810-151633003.jpg

Congrats on a nice example. The FEs are such pretty coins. All the lettering, the date, and major designs are clearly there. That's important. You'll always remember this first one.

There are actually four of these 1858s, the two varieties you're familiar with, the large and small letter obverses, and the high and low leaf reverses. Yours is a high leaf reverse. The leaf they're describing points up just to the left of the C in CENT. The low leaf is in the same place but it doesn't point up as high (only about half-way up). Thus, you've got the large letter, high leaf variety. That's one down, three to go, if you want to complete the set. :)

I'll complete the set one day. When I find all of them.

Congratulation Shrews! A nice looking well circulated flying eagle cent. I'm not sure what the other five coins are but figure you paid six dollars a coin that would be a good price. Again that's a nice addition to your set.

It's the 1858 large left her with the high leaf. High and low varieties and large and small letters. If you want them all, that 1856 will be a killer in price. Save your money for that one. :)

Thank you. I know it will be expensive. I do want them all. The other ones are a Barber dime a sitting liberty dime. And a blank waffled dime came with webbing. And 1872 10 cents. And a 6 pince grate britt. I'll make a new thread on each of them.

The only bit of advice would give you if you buy another Flying Eagle for more money is look for one that does not have the black surfaces. Most people know that copper turns green when it corrodes. Few people know that it can also turn a dark, dull red. Here is an example of red corrosion on the right side of this three errors large cent.

Copper-nickel coins, which includes the Flying Eagle Cent and the modern nickel, usually turn black, and that color is to be avoided. Copper-nickel coins can get green spots too, but that is more unusual.

That is a great looking FE. And, even better, it is yours.

Great coin, Shrews. I love that your dealer enjoys negotiating a bit to help you along with your collection. I hope you never lose your excitement for coins.

Nice pick-up. The FE cent is a sometimes under-appreciated coin.

    Regarding these comments . . .
You might get a lot more satisfaction from owning one really nice flying eagle cent than you would from a complete set of low grade examples. Just something to think about as you chart the course of your collection . . . date/mint set collecting isn't the only way to pursue this hobby.

I like these types of coins. I can't afford a really nice FE. I don't want to be in this hobby to make money. Or to collect whole sets ex I enjoy collecting all types of coins. I'm not set on one thing. And yes I'll only be able to to afford circulated coins. And that's what I like anyways. They have stories.

My kind of collector. I have an almost complete set from 1900 to date of coins intended for circulation. The vast majority I actually found in circulation. As young kids we would get together from time to time and trade. We judged what a trade was worth by scarcity in our environment. So, I have a bunch that one or more of my friends might have found. I've said before that my criteria has always been eye appeal - my eye.

It is nice pick up. Collecting coins for the fun is, to me what the hobby is all about. Coins like this FE Cent are what attracted me to the hobby as a kid. It is wonderful that you collect a bit of everything. As you have found, this hobby is very addicting.
