Entry post! Prize 8,7,10. A few weeks ago I started collecting Lincoln pennies made 1909-1982, more so looking out for those rare ones that may still be put there. I came across an old buffalo nickel but have no idea the year since its gone.

I've got one of those, and might actually add it to the "Pick Bin & Giveaways" list when I can take pictures of it, so it could potentially be one of the "pick yer prize" options for Prize #1 this month!

They're cool little pieces, those little Japanese rectangles. I recently sold my gold 2-bu, and kind of miss it.

Just added this 1857 dime to the Prize #1 pick list. Will likely add some more stuff by the end of the month.

Oh, yeah- also this half-groschen from Lithuania, struck under the authority of Sigismund II Augustus of Poland, and dated 1561. Great little early-dated silver coin, with the charging knight and heraldic eagle. I love these for their cool design, the fact that they're actually dated (which is not always the case with early coins of this era), and they're nicely affordable, too. I have a Mint State example in my collection.

So the Prize #1 list will continue to expand, giving a wider selection by the end of the month.

Regarding Prize #9 (the "pick your own 2019 bullion coin" prize):

The donor (@Kasia) suggested the 2019 Niue "Owl of Athena" coin. I was unfamiliar with the type. It looks like a pretty dandy choice for a modern bullion piece. Of course there are a lot of types to choose from.

While searching through quarter rolls, I found a 2019 "W" Guam mint washington quarter! I'm very happy about that. It went directly into a 2 x 2. However, I am curious as to why so many people are selling their 2019 "W" quarters with a label of "uncirculated"? Technically, anything taken out of circulation (such as these quarters) should be either a circulated condition or just AU. Anyone have some thoughts about this?

    BTW #8, #2, #1, #3, #12

"Uncirculated" really just means "no wear" - as though it never circulated - even though many "Uncirculated" coins actually do circulate, briefly, before being saved. The grade descriptions are mostly to do with the amount of wear present.

It is an old-fashioned term that's still with us, and is a bit of a misnomer for the reason you described. The modern term "Mint State" is more technically correct, but "Uncirculated" remains part of the lingo.

    Congrats on the "W" find!

*Entry Post* Any prize is fine
Many coins in circulation are still in mint state, so if we get confused MS is to me a better description, but does not mean uncirculated, actually BU is a generic term and covers a wide range of quality, its the tomato tomotto argument. it does not matter. One says a merchant touched it therefor its no longer uncirculated, one says its in a mint set therefor uncirculated, when the sets are circulated among collectors. Terms and descriptions vary, and are usually biased weather your the buyer or seller. so basics of using your own eyes and opinion, don't buy the label. buy the coin. everyone has seen the mint sets from the 70s you could certainly find better quality coins in circulation, so many factors to consider. and all points are valid. and usually a good argument of both sides are correct but they both want to argue. so let them argue.
