We have an average grade of 64.00 and close to an even split on the designation (7-none; 6-star; 8-PL). The answer is MS 63 Star:
It is difficult to show how pl the coin is from a picture. The following video does a better job (use the arrows to scroll to see the reverse): https://www.instagram.com/p/B0zfsMinxxb/ The hit on the neck is what I think limited the overall grade. It is reminiscent of the hit (maybe slightly larger) we saw on @physics-fan3.14 first GTG post featuring the Washington Quarter (The Official CoinTalk Grading Experiment 1).
Thanks, most people probably don’t know this but I used to collect mint state Barber Quarters and my experience taught me that NGC was very tough on grading these coins. For example: I purchased this coin raw from Heritage in 2002 (yes they used to auction raw coins) and thought it had a chance at MS65. Boy was I wrong.
@Lehigh96 that one has a few minor hits, but 63 seems a bit harsh. I wouldn't be surprised with a 64 or even a 65. Have you sent it in more than once (or tried PCGS)?
No, I showed that coin as an example but almost every Barber Quarter I submitted came back 1-2 grades below what I thought they would grade. Here is another example I thought would grade at least MS63.
Hmm, I whiffed this one, but I guessed 65, and it looks like the consensus was 65. I guess I should start buying NGC Barber quarters and crossing them to PCGS.
