My set up is not much more then this guy in the video. I do have an extra light source. It's not an elaborate setup, it's very simple.
You got it. Just a cheap flexible desk lamp from (not Walmart) Kmark. You can get very elaborate with this stuff, not me.
Can you tell me exactly how you're doing that? I can't get anywhere near that on my iPhone X. And I'm starting to get a complex.
For lighting, you'll probably need a minimum of two light sources placed at 10 & 2 o'clock at 45 degree angles to the subject. With the camera mounted directly above the subject, the light would bounce away from the lens. Gooseneck table lamps would work well. Chris
Look up axial lighting set up on this forum or Google it and your eyes will open wide...especially when taking photos of PL or Proof coins. Amazing results...
Sorry, I can’t let iPhone X have bad rap. It’s about light and aim. Here what I did using my iPhone X.
Here is my basic set up. 2 lamps gooseneck wrapped to diffuse lighting so not so harsh. Piece of paper to diffuse further if needed. Table top tripod $8. The coin is sitting on a CD holder; have to thank someone here on CT for that tip. It makes focusing so much easier and the camera doesn't struggle in and out of focus and also makes the coin "float". For the axial lighting I don't have a box to hold the glass at an angle to shoot through so I have to hold the glass in hand for now. Don't have the bellows or extension tubes but can get decent focus. Another trick that the coin holder stand and tripod allows you to shoot at the lowest f stop and ISO which is important on the details. Most of mine are at ISO 125 and f 4.2 which is a limitation of my camera.
The hard part for me on the proofs is the balance between too much light which covers up the surface of the coin because of the glare and being too dark. Edit: if you need to zoom in any further than what you can on this reverse, you probably aren't looking at an error just molecules of metal...
It's ALL about the lighting. But that being said, a good copy stand is essential. I had Ray build one for me.
