Anyone getting the $1 Coin Historical Signature Set

Looks nice, but doesn't seem worth what they're charging. If it was $5 or less I might even think about it, but for twenty bucks, forget it.

I've liked some of the newest releases connected with the presidential dollars, in particular the dollar set that includes the silver eagle. But this one is just hype and the print just doesn't thrill me. Nothing there other than another proof dollar and I have more than enough of those. I'll pass

 

Let's see for twenty bucks you get a proof president dollar worth four bucks in a paper card with a fake autograph and a certificate authenticating the modern coin that NO ONE is counterfeiting and the fake signature. How much is a COA for a fake signature worth?

Needless to say I will not be ordering any.

Yes and in 2004 I spent twenty bucks on 10 cents worth of nickels and a fake medal and took in a nice profit of over $150!

I ordered one just to see how nice they really are before I decide on whether to collect them. I did this back in 2004 and 2005 when the Westward Journey Coin and Medal set came out for the same price and that sure proved to be a profitable decision. Who knows. If low interest causes this series to flop and very few are sold then just maybe...... You just never know with modern collectibles and if it's a bust then I'm left with an attractive conversation piece to add to my collection and all I'm out is $20.

 

I like your way of thinking ACW. My thought was if I have the money to blow it would be a nice thing to collect from a historical point of view. Great conversation piece as you said. Mostly, if they are very nice, well built and beautiful, I would like to have them.

Reality dictates that I have more important things to spend money on at the moment besides my hobby.

People might be selling this set short. I think the portraits are from the BEP archives, printed in intaglio (enraved). I think I recognize that Washington Portrait from my Series 1917 large size dollar bill.
(On second glance - might not be the same portrait, but if it is an engraved portrait with engraved signaure, then it is collectable to people who collect souvenir cards, for example).

There shall soon be type sets of US Mint packaging for these dollars... some 9 different types already!

 

And today with a little looking you can buy them for between 50% and issue price. Yes if you were a speculative flipper you might make out well. But I'm a collector not a flipper. So maybe in a few years I'll buy these at 50% of issue. But I doubt it because there are much cheaoer ways to buy the proof dollars, and the fake signature just really don't appeal to me. The intaglio portraits of the president are nice, but not enough to make me spend the money.

 

Well, I said I would see what they look like and........... Butt ugly is being nice to the series!!

What made the mint figure they had to make a 8.5"x5.5" box to fit a monster coin like the sac. If you were to collect the entire series you had better figure on an addition to the house. The presentation would have been much better if the box had been half the size. I can't help but to give it a thumbs down.

 

No bloody way. This is just another ploy by the Mint to exploit collectors.

Am I just being cynical in thinking that the Mint is desperately trying to come up with as many ways of possible to get money from the president dollars to justify their existance, since they're not really circualting much and people are getting sick of them? Or is that just me?

I'm not like some who say they should be discontinued... I actually like the idea, in theory, even though I believe it will never be a practically circulating coin (nor will any 1 dollar coin, as long as a paper 1 dollar bill still exists), but it's starting to annoy me how persistant the Mint is being in trying to push every possible permutation of these things. It's almost to level of pathetically begging people to buy them... "Please, we have millions of these things to get rid of! Come on, you'll pay $20 for this coin in a fancy folder, right?"

I'll pay face value for 1 each of the business strikes for my collection... and I buy the proof set every year anyway that incidentally contains these in proof, but that's it! Not going to get the coin and first lady medal set, the individual presidential proof set, the dollar set, first day cover, this thing now, and whatever else they dream up to stick these things into. Enough is enough already.

 

This is different because of the packaging and peripheral materials included. I'd prefer the Mint to just sell raw coins and not bother with all of this tie-in crap they've been promoting recently.

 

Hi, alot of people are'nt really aware of this series. They have no idea that you can just pick up a roll in a bank. In my opinion the mint is out of touch with their marketing. How can they expect to circulate them without educating the average person about the coins? I would like to see 5 coin sets that include (P, D, S proof, P Satin finish, D Satin finish.). Also a Silver Eagle set that includes the proof, plain, & W Mint state coins.
