what's going on with this coin? Check out the strike throughs. Under God and over united. Right of face and monicello right of third window from the right. Under left eye and under monicello from e moving right. I included this example of a struck through cloth because, on rightside near top in struck through area is an anomaly. That anomaly looked similar to the one on my coin, so I checked for strike throughs. Hope the pics are ok.
Are you saying that's what caused the strike throughs? They are obvious. Circulated coin will have wear but, does that negate the strike throughs?
Your coin is definitely not a struck through cloth. In my opinion it's circulation damage. You are looking to hard. Believe me when I say this.. If I feel like you have something legit I will surely say so.
The rim has no rust on it. Corrosion is rust and I see none on rim. Every corroded coin I've seen had rust on the rim and edge. I see none. Thanks. I will have this checked out.
I have seen hundreds of nickels just like yours in my metal detecting finds. Corrosion means many things. Good luck. Just remember that not all coin dealers specialize in error attribution. Let us know your result.
Look up corrosion as it pertains to cupro-nickel. Its very informative. Nickel is very resistant to corrosion. With coin in hand there is no appearance of rust or discoloration on the rim or edge where luster is present. As I stated earlier, I will have it checked. It will remove all doubt.
If it was struck through cloth then that would take away from the details of the bust and letters etc. Your coin shows good detail just a weird surface. If you compare it to a real strikethrough you will see this difference. Since it has detail and since the surface is consistently damaged throughout then it had to be some type of corrosive or mechanical process. You mention nickel is resistant. Does that mean nickel never corrodes or gets damaged? Have you had this coin its entire time since it left the MINT so that you can you eliminate *all* possibilities of various damage? Have you ever metal detected finding coins in all various ground compounds like paddyman has?
