Hi, im brand new to coin collecting and this is my first post here with y'all. I have an interesting 1981 Lincoln Memorial Cent with what looks like an error from the mint. I tried looking up a similar type error with no luck... would y'all be so kind as to let me know what the deal is with type of coin error, if it is in fact one. Thank you for your time, I appreciate any and all feedback given...
It was hit by something after it left the mint. Copper is a soft metal and you can see where the metal was moved/displaced from the hit. Sorry, but it's damage, not an error
The 8 was hit by something and since copper is soft the metal moved. This is common on Cents but it makes your coin damaged and worth face value. Welcome to CT.
Welcome to the neighborhood @75loops ! Did you know that the American Numismatic Association (ANA) is located in Colo Spgs? One of the great advantages in joining the ANA is that their vast library is made available to members. Chris
Hi Chris.... I did not know that! Thank you so much for the info and I will be looking them up tonight after sum dinner. I could definitely use the library to help me out. There is sooo much to learn and so many dates, coins, and different classifications that I feel as though I'm back in first grade!! Lol... really appreciate the time and the info sir... have yourself a good weekend!!
Thanks for taking the time to clarify and explain the damage. I thought for sure it was a mint error!! You and Oldhoopster made it very easy to understand the difference and it will help a ton as I continue looking through coins in the future! Appreciate ya and hope you have a good weekend!!
I’m new, trying to figure things out. Ihave a 1981 d penny with the TRUSS instead of TRUST. Is it worth anything? Thx
Purewater, Yes, it is best to start a thread so you will know the responses are for you. Go to forums index, choose the one you think is best for your question, then go to the top of the lists of threads in that forum, and find the box that says start new thread, ( don't worry about a poll~ ignore it unless that is what you want. And type your question. You can upload a photo using the button at the bottom of your text box. Welcome, Jim
