i would love to be wrong in fact i intend to get that verfied later this week straight from the source. however there is a big difference in total number of ms 70's given out by pcgs than ngc so whats the explaination for that coz i dont buy the argument that ngc grades loosely
I do buy the argument that NGC grades to a different standard than PCGS does when it comes to awarding 70's, as well in some other areas. One need not even believe that NGC grades "loosely" in order to buy that argument.
I believe it Mike. No, I don't mean that I think PCGS has an actual number in mind that they will allow. But I do believe that they purposely refuse to allow more than very few 70's to go out. I believe they do this in order to maintain, what is in my opinion, the mistaken belief that they have stricter standards than anybody else.
Man, if that is the case with PCGS, I feel that's very wrong. Might be good business practice, but IMHO if a coin deserves a 70 grade, then it should get it. IMHO if they grade a coin that is a 70, but put it in a 69, they are pretty much lying, just to put a "strict" front. Could be wrong, but that's my view on it. Phoenix
I don't disagree with that, however I would suggest that is simply a more-narrow definition of a 70, and that's quite different from a quota....at least the way I define the term (and partly why I phrased the response to Spock the way that I did). What really sticks in my craw, personally, is the arbitrary and liability induced grading ceilings -- which is quite different from a quota -- but evidenced I believe in the refusing "to allow more than a very few 70's to go out" as you put it. Humbly and numismatically yours...Mike
grading ceiling and quota is the same thing as far as i am concerned especially if you use the term in a trade sense all it means is ceiling i dont quite see how that can be a more narrow definition of a 70. IMHO if a coin is a 70 its a 70 if the TPG has graded a 70 before or not should not impact the grade of the next coin. you might even call it a bell curve without the curving up but as you say thats just MHO its yours that matters when you are selecting a tpg or buying a coin
All good ! My comment was actually aimed at a post on a different thread, which implied "If it ain't in PCGS, WHY NOT ??? Must be a problem...". We all know that ain't so. It is ironic ! As someone earlier said, a grading point or two has little or no effect on ultra rarities.
