His month is here! I only own a couple of rough Provincial coins of Augustus - but hoping to obtain an Imperial with a nice portrait sometime in the future. Here is one... AE unit of Augustus 27 BC. - 14 AD., Philippi, Macedonia - bare head of Augustus right, AVG behind / two colonists (or priests?) ploughing right with yoke of oxen (3.12 grams, 16mm) Philippi (Colonia Julia Augusta Victrix Philippensis) which (St.Paul visited) was a Roman colony founded by Augustus after the famous battle of Philippi, fought between Antony and Octavius and Brutus and Cassius, in 42 BC. Please post your Augustus coins in honor of August (or as we call it in Canada "the month before hockey starts").
Here's an early Spanish mint of his. Augustus denarius 18 BC, Spanish mint (Colonia Partica?) Denarius AR 17mm., 3,48g. CAESAR AVGVSTO, laureate head right / S P -Q R, temple of Mars Ultor: round-domed, tetrastyle temple set on podium of three steps, within which is a chariot right, carrying an aquila and miniature galloping horses. RIC 119.
Clavdivs, I've posted this coin before but will post again in honor of the month of August. I sold this high relief portrait of Augustus at a Heritage auction 7 or 8 years ago.

Here's to the one who "found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble". It is intriguing though that the month of Sextillis was named after him when he was actually born in late September. By the way Claudius... I didn't know that hockey season EVER ended up there!
In his youth the guy was a devious, lying, cheating scoundrel, who, as Marc Antony put it, "Was a boy who owes everything to a name." And he was exactly what Rome needed to survive this trying and desperate time:
As a fellow Canadian I can tell you that Hockey season and beer season run together most months of the year. However, when there is no hockey, there is still beer.

Wow, fantastic coins. All I have of the man is this one with Antony that doesn't look much like the young Octavian... And this one as emperor Augustus with a nice stylized portrait
