I think maybe that the current coins will not be taken out of circulation. So unless they are to change shape/size in the future we might see britannia in our change for many years to come.
The following BBC video link about the new coins and their designer has been provided from good friends on the Virtual Stamp Club message board and may be of more interest to our members here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7326491.stm Mark Coral Springs, FL
Like this year (2008) with the Olympics 1908 commemorative £2 coin the general circulation commemoratives will still be continuing next year. Business as usual then! £2= 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of publication of The Origin of Species. & 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns. 50p= 2009: 250th anniversary of the foundation of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
I think the Wales question was answered..and I am parphrasing..Its more of a principality or a commonwealth so it is not represented on the royal shield some 650 years ago. I understand that some in the British press were as negative as some of the folks on here. ''I like my toilet tissue white, my shoes black and my coinage depicting grasses and grains.''. I think its good to shake things up.
well i have an axe to grind with the nincompoops from the royal mint they screwed around with my order on multiple occasions now i hope it comes through like its supposed to the silver sets cost an arm and a leg
I know what you mean. Its a lot of money for less than four ounces of silver. But I like the concept very much. And I gave the reason why Wales was omitted in the other post on this subject. Its what I read, not my opinion.
Am (old design) base metal 2008 proof set with 11 (inc. 2X £5 coins (£15.99 total)) costs the same as this shield set does with 7 coins (£1.88 total). The UK needs to re-design it''s coat of arms. It's interesing that the design was actually drawm by a welshman yet it does not feature.
I am not a foreign coin collector - Not that I don't like them, I just have my hands full with US coins. But I have to say, I love these coins and just ordered my sets through the Royal Mint. Personally, I think this is a brilliant idea for coin designs.
Well Puerto Rico does have a non-voting representative in the House, and Puerto Rico can vote in, and send delegates to, the primaries. Anyway on topic I think it's a interesting set of designs... glad to see they're willing to shake things up a little with a complete redesign of all of their circulating coinage. Kind of makes me wish the US would do that too instead of messing around with dollar coins nobody really uses that much. I like the state quarters and such... but I'd wish they'd do something this bold, making an across the board change to EVERYTHING circulating! Come on, go for it! The Royal Mint has special sets both in base metal and silver for both "last of the old" and "first of the new" design sets. I may pick up the base metal ones, but the silver ones seem rediculously pricey to me... besides if I'm getting these as coin examples of circualting coinage I'd like them to be the metals they actually ciruclated in lol... same reason I don't get US silver proof sets.
Yeh great does that now mean that us Welshmen (And Wimen LOL) can now produce our own coins After all we have the Royal mint Better tell the Welsh mp's to get on the job :smile
I like new ideas on circulation coins designs. They are often just for conmemorative ones, but everybody will enjoy these. I hadn't realized about what you said about Wales. As chrisild said, it is available at the Royal Mint. No shipping cost for Euro zone. And it is not really expensive, compared with many other sets near here. There is also a combined edition both the last of the old, and the first of the new designs.
Got my Welsh coins last week. Well, the "new designs" set produced by the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales, that is. The price (I just wanted the base metal set) was a little much, but combined with free shipping it was fine. Interestingly the folder shows a few images of the design progress, so to say - and surprise, Mr Dent also made designs that would have addressed "my" issues: Figures and bigger characters for the value indications, and the lion's butt on the 1p instead of the 20p coin. Yes, Wales is not represented, but if the Mint picks the Royal Arms for the designs, well ... Besides, once the new coins actually circulate, you will always see jigsaw puzzle pieces of the arms anyway. And also, since the new coins have the same specifications (diameter, composition, etc.) as the old or current coins, both will co-exist in your wallet for a good long time. In terms of design, however, I like the new pieces. Christian
I just went ahead and whipped out the CC.... and I never do that because once you get started it is hard stop! :goof: I ordered the base metals both proof and UNC and the silver set. A little more than I wanted to spend but they were only making 10,000 silver sets and 20,000 base metal proof sets for world wide sales.... and if you thought that was expensive, you should have checked out the gold and platnum sets! If only I had the money. I tried to convince my wife to let me buy the silver and gold sets and she said the regular base set was enough. What she doesn't know wont hurt....
I got mine in the post today... The 5p coin is fantastic...I know this is a proof version I'm looking at but it really looks good. I assume much of the £35($70) goes towards the fantastic box
I know you live in England, but how long does the Royal Mint take to ship their stuff out? Also, I would have to agree about the box - At least the Brits know how to do it right!!!
The customer service told me four-six weeks. But the website read 21 days. So somewhere in there I guess. Cant wait. And to the guy who thinks $562.00 isnt alot of money. God bless you, Ya show off.
