Loupe had me getting loopy and seeing things that wasnt even there. Lol! I just figured out your handle. Pretty good. Pickin on newbies and grinin about the whole time. I'm not mad. The first person that did the first thing had to practice.
Being a newbie here too......I have learned a few things. 1. If you need more then a 10x loupe to see a problem with coin, the problem isn't a problem. 2. the same questions get asked over and over here. Google the problem or question first, the answer will probably lead you back to a past thread here. 3. Check the new posts thread every time you come here. lots of good learning to be done in those. 4. REAL Doubled dies and errors are few and far between, many are known, and lists of them can be found. When you get a coin that is a good possibility for a real DD or error ,check the lists and pictures, if you still have a problem, then post it here with a good picture of the coin (both sides) taken through a 10x loupe (not as hard as I thought it would be), straight on with good lighting. Help will be forthcoming. I'm sure if any of the above is wrong, somebody will correct me! LOL
If you think that a loupe makes you loopy you won't know what to do with a scope. I would imagine that if one new what they were looking for then a scope could be useful for identifying variety's by the die stage. Tell me? if you don't know what you are looking for or at. How is magnification going to help you? By the way, I have been Pickin and Grinnin since I was a kid.
Variety's and errors aren't problems, but I see how you would think that. When most collectors begin, we began with circulated coins. The key is to look at new MS coinage. Figure out what a coin looks like when it was minted. Then and only then are you going to be able to figure out what is a problem and what is worth looking at. Then further your study into what you see. Circulated coins are just that circulated and for lack of a better word damaged. Don't confuse "damage" with the numismatic term of damage, they are one in the same but different around here. Errors and Variety's happen before the coin is released for circulation, that right there eliminates any kind of problem. Hang in there Bear.
Actually it is called a DDO or a DDR. Don't forget RPM, Type 2, single squeeze, MMS. And those are only the basics. I guess now you have me Pickin.
