Hey guys I was looking through an antique store and came across a collection of coins. I came across a 1971 proof set. The penny in the proof set is colored like a rainbow. when it comes into the light it shines and has the colors of the rainbow on it. it was a proof set also. Is this an error? If it is how much is it worth. I lokked at other 1971 proof sets and they didn,t have this strange coloring on it . Please help.
I'm betting that its a toned coin...it happens when a coin (like copper) gets hot for a while or many other reason...do a search for Toning...no its not an error...and it doesn't add any value to it unless you find a collector that collect toned coins and wants to alot.! Speedy
What you are seeing on the cent is called toning, this is an environmental thing, and is not an error !! Rick
As speedy and metalman have said, your looking at toning. What their not saying is that toning is highly collectible to some people and depending on the beauty of the toning, can bring in quite a premium. To others, toned coins are damaged coins (which is technically correct) and so they don't want anything to do with them. Neither view is wrong, its just a matter of what individual collects like. Toning is popular right now, so you may be able to resell them for a decent profit.
Rosy.. 1 post and you disappeared? Kathy.. Do you have a question? This thread you posted on is from 2005. The original poster hasn't been seen since 2005. It's better to create a new thread with pictures. Welcome to CoinTalk
Yes, I was replying to the poster who posted yesterday. As for everyone making new posts, it's really not necessary and just clogs up the board. If the topic is relevant I am fine with continuing a thread from an existing necro thread. I hope this person didn't pay $21 for a 1971 penny.
