I’ve been looking for my first toned Morgan. This 1879 fit the bill for just $25.



Seller's photos are a lot more saturated - but you really can't expect that kind of toning. The in-hand look is what you see above, and that is perfectly lovely as far as I am concerned.

This is about as toned as they get in my own collection—and I hasten to add that I apologize for the terrible pics. You have to wonder what happened to this one once you are surprised by the appearance of the reverse. You can't really tell by these awful photos, but the reverse is almost blaze white while the toning on the obverse is very minor.

Yeah. Definitely whizzed or wire brushed hard. Still... it's a piece of history!

 

A new piece for my son's type book. 1844 O no motto.
An even $50 delivered. Sure it's cleaned and has some scratches on the obverse, but it's a nice looking hole filler.

 

The coin has arrived and this is what it's like - a 1944-S Mercury for $7.95. Does anyone else think that mint mark looks upside down?

I hope you know it is AU and AT. But at $25 you can’t go wrong. As long as you are happy with it.

I have serious authenticity concerns. It could be whizzed. I need a good example of a whizzed coin as a teaching tool, but dealers keep wanting too much for them.

 

I'm ignorant of much terminology in the coin collecting universe, but I was able to extract a few comments from the cognoscenti on whizzing within the past two weeks. You might want to search the site to see what might show up. I paid $24.xx for the Morgan shown a few posts up. The coin is, otherwise, suitable to me, but in fact, if I had the expertise of the three members I often communicate with, I probably would not have bid on this one.

 

I suppose the S looks like mine, and the price you paid demonstrates what a bargain the later Merc dimes really are. I have an uncirculated '46P I bought a few weeks ago that appears as if no human hand has ever touched it. It set me back just over $6.

I reviewed the seller’s other offerings and he has a number of similar Morgans. I suspect he’s trying to generate a little profit by applying this toning to some borderline sliders.

At 25 dollars for his efforts, he’s not getting rich.

 

$12 from a wholesaler at the Summer FUN show. Still around the $50 mark even after the certification fees! FS-301 Misplaced Date. Pop 5 in all grades. This is the lowball. VERY RARE. The flag of the 5 can be seen beneath the date, and it also has a Repunched Date, though PCGS doesn't note that on the holder.

 

I had one of these in MS condition (my grade was MS-63). Paid $40 or so. I was under the impression that they were actually quite common and not worth the certification/attribution expense, hence the low pop. Bill Fivaz and a 3cn specialist looked at it. I sold it for $120.

 

I think you may have sold it for way less than you should have. I've looked for them for about 2 years and this is the second I've found. Also, low pop means more members need them for registry sets.

 

Here's the only other one I found. PM me and I'll tell you what it sold for. Not sure how much of the value I got was for the variety and how much was the off-center, though.

I was actually confusing two different coins. Here is my MPD. I paid $25 from a German seller. I do not remember if/where/when I sold it, nor for how much. Grade was AU.

If my records are correct, it disappeared from my inventory between 9/19/17 and 9/21/17. The price marked was $40. I don’t know if it was the same coin, or if I kept it and now have no idea where I put it. Oh well.
