Is there such a thing as an original roll of Morgan dollars, anymore ?

A common date, like say an 1885-P,81-S,84-P,etc.

could there still ever be a roll not picked over ?

I didn't think they came in rolls, only bags. So I would say no.

As there are still original sealed bank bags of them, I'm sure there are also plenty of "original rolls", as well. Remember, though, "original" doesn't necessarily equate with high quality.

This thread brings up a question that I have often wondered about but yet never been able to find an answer. That being - when, what year or approximately what year, did the practice of banks placing coins in paper rolls first originate ?

If anyone knows this answer and could cite the source - I would be most appreciative.

That has been a question that I have pondered for quite some time.
I would appreciate it as well, if someone had information on this.

I saw one (1878-s) at the Black Hills Coin show and the price asked was $5,000. Pretty steep if you ask me...

This is what I love about this site - learning & thinking about trends in money vs 'ebay & what's it worth.' Now we have a project .. I'm intrigued too!

Oh I've seen them before and they are out there for sale. But that's not the point. My question is when they were rolled ? For example it's quite possible that roll of 1878-S dollars never saw a paper roll until well into the very late 1800's or possibly even the early 1900's.

Of course it would have been easy for the mint sealed bag of dollars to have sat in a bank vault for 20 or 30 years, perhaps longer even, before it was ever opened and the coins placed into rolls.

Thus this has an effect on what we think of when we say an original roll which implies that the coins had never seen circulation and that they had never been taken out of that roll, mixed with other loose coins and then re-rolled at a later date. Which would mean that the roll was not original at all.

And that, I suspect, is what Mark was talking about with his comment.

I don't think this was a "Mint Rolled" roll of Morgans. The paper wrapper they were in was light blue and had an advertisement for "Willie WireHand" I could see, kinda like those old paper schoolbook covers. Although it did have that rounded crimp on the ends.

Now that is a huge misnomer. The mint never issued any "rolled" silver dollars, they only used bags. Only banks rolled the coins.

Chuckle, my enthusiasm of being able to contribute to the thread simply got the best of me. Again, please pardon my poor choice of words "Mint Rolled." What I meant was simply Mint State coins "Rolled", thus would explain the use of Willie Wirehand wrappers obviously from the 50s, 60s, or 70s...

I saw one last week. It was clearly original, but that has little to do with the packaging, as it was in a square plastic coin tube. The quality of the coins guaranteed that it was original because as nice as they are the first person to pick through it was going to have some very nice pieces to distribute and it clearly wasn't picked through.

No, and as I understand it there never was.

To wit, I don't recall ever hearing of mint-issued rolls of Morgans. Thus I'm not sure there's such a thing as an "original roll"....Mike

I think that generally speaking, at least, "original rolls" is a term used to describe rolls that were assembled from original bags and kept intact from that time. Once those rolls have been picked through and the better pieces removed and substituted, they are no longer considered "original".

greetings! i have often wondered if there were any sealed morgan dollar bags left as well..

Mr. Feld......not that i could ever even consider purchasing a bag unless i could figure out some way to live in it as well...... may i ask what they were trading for and where would i even see them?? the largest coin show i have been to is our own indiana state show. i remember seeing them in 1982 but i don't think i have seen any at the last few shows..tho i never asked!!!
i have not seen any appear at any of our local shows.

also interesting question regarding the first "rolling" of coins. if i happen to find the info in one of my odd books, i will post. hope someone already knows tho and beats me to it..... thanks for the info....steve

Steve, I haven't seen any bags turn up at shows in a long time, though that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. These days, they are usually sold privately, sometimes being the object of sealed bids/offers by dealers who are made aware of them by one means or another.

Prices can vary considerably based upon the dates, if known, the degree of competition for them at the time of sale AND whether the bidders/buyer can inspect the coins first or not. I have heard of some bags going for as low as $20-$25 per coin under favorable circumstances to the buyer, though a number of others have sold for considerably more.

I am certain that there are still plenty of others out there.
