2008 ASE Unc. - 2 varieties of the coin

For the ASE collector, and for other numismatists, there are 2 versions of the 2008 ASE unc. coin. The reverse side of the coin was struck with 2 different reverse types, either the 2007 style or the 2008 style.

I subscribe to receive 10 ASE uncs. from the US Mint annually. Unfortunately, all 10 of mine had the 2008 style reverse. Since I'm collecting ASEs I need to get my hands on at least one of the 2008 with the 2007 style reverse.

Nice Find! I just checked all 4 of my ASE - 1 proof, 2 UNC and 1 Bullion - all with the 2008 reverse. Now I am on the hunt! Reminds me of the 1975/1976 Eisenhower Dollars.

    Nice article!

I just viewed your posted link. There have been many significant changes to the reverse. My question is why, why, why??? The original design was quite attractive to me. The new design or I should say the changes made seem to be for no particular necessary need. Has the Mint purposely trumped up a change to stimulate sales? Could they purposefully created the 2007 reverse on 2008 to start a sales drive for this error?

I love this coin. I had all Uncirculated and Proofs, minus the expensive mid 90's. I also had the 06 three coin anniversary set and the 06W single. They all went to save the farm from repossession (hypothetically speaking). I made a killing at market, but I was sick about it for weeks after. I now have only one a 2007 UNC (commemorates my standing as Best Man at my Brothers wedding). Actually he was to receive that coin but I gave him the 2007 W instead. He will continue to get another W coin each year to commemorate my love for him and his wife.

I feel like the mint is doing their best to create any reason to keep this type in high sales. Wonder what will be next. Anyone else feel the same way?

    Keep on Collecting!!!

Check out the Jan. 28. 2008 Coin World (VOL. 49, Issue 2494) for aarticle about the change. Apparently the font change arose from the use of "digital technology in the engraving process." The article doesn't mention the application of the new font to the 2007's. I suppose the aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder, but the hobby seems to thrive on varieties and now we have something new on which to expound and opine.

I just ordered 6 from the U.S. Mint because of this article. What are my chances of getting a 2007 reverse?

    Thanks,

Interesting, all of the "2008-W reverse of 2007" on Ebay right now are graded NGC MS70. The "buy it now" price is $249 and there are several dutch auctions listed. None of the auctions have ended yet so it's not yet possible to see what people are willing to pay for these varieties.

Who knows how many of these coins have been minted? I'm sure now that the word is out there will be thousands of coins ordered from the mint, searched, then returned to the mint.

I saw that on TV this morning, and was wondering about them. I might keep my eyes out, wouldn't hurt IMHO.

The first few auctions for the "variety" coin with the 2007 reverse have ended on Ebay. It appears that some people are willing to pay $249 ("Buy it now") for the slabbed NGC MS70 coin.

I want one of these, but I'm willing to wait and don't want the slabbed coin. I'm still waiting to buy the 1999 Statehood quarters silver proof set. The price on that set has been dropping lately and it's down to about $275 from a high of over $400.

I did place another order for 10 more 2008 ASE uncs. from the Mint. I'll see if I get lucky.

Shared this interesting fact with my local coin shop yesterday and they weren't aware of it yet. Unfortuanately, they didn't have any 08W's

I was going to try to visit some coin shops and see if they had any ASE uncs. before they're aware of this "variety."

From what I've read in another coin forum, the variety coin was not shipped out initially from the Mint for those who had subscribed to receive the ASE annually. People who placed later orders got some (or all!) of their coins with the 2007 reverse. Who knows, the Mint may produce millions of these?

MM - I asked my dealer for the coin first before I told him what was up. After he told me he didn't have it, I told him what I heard.

That stinks about the availability. I would think that the variety would have been minted first which would give us "subscribers" first grabs, but I guess not. I should order some more, but I'm never that lucky.

If you look closely at the picture provided on the Mint's website for the 2008-W UNC ASE it shows the reverse of 2007 varietey.

If we're talking about the same photo it looks like a computer drawing to me. I'm sure they just used the same one as previous years and changed the date.

Now, the real question is...does the mint still have any of these in stock? I'm considering ordering a few to pick through and sell if none end up being the 2007 rev.

The first order I placed for the 2008 SAE, came with the 2008 back. With the price silver going up I decided
to buy 2 more, these came with the 2007 back. I just got lucky.
