Hello, I’ve been trying to get an understanding of coin grading. So I took one of my liberty quarters and attempted to assign a grade to it. I’d appreciate input on if you think the grade is correct or not and why. I realize it is subjective, but just trying to learn. The quarter below I graded as very good. Am I right? As always, I thank you for your time and willingness to share insights with this newbie.
Another question.........what if the front would grade different then the back? Which is more important if either. Do you grade the whole coin based on the worst side?
Judging by PCGS Photograde IMO the obverse looks like it should grade VG 8-10 and the reverse at G 4. I've seen differing opinions on this site as they would use the obverse to grade it and others saying it would go to the lower grade. There's many very experienced members on Coin Talk and I'd like to see their opinions. @Conder101; @cpm9ball; @GDJMSP; @furryfrog02; et al.
Each coin series has certain "tells" for the different grades. "Photograde" is probably the most popular grading guide, but I like the old B & D grading book.
SLQ's are beautiful coins & yours is no exception...but please, either crimp those staples or put it in a different holder.
If grading correctly, yes coins are graded according to the worst side. And on this coin yes the rev is worse than the obv, but not much. Using strict ANA standards the obv is G6 at best, the rev is almost a G4, but not quite. End result, G6. edited to fix typo
Doug, you’re saying that coins are graded according to the worst side, so why is the end result a G6 and not a G4? Is it a typo or is G6 rather a more lenient “market grade” where the obv is more important?
