Stumbled across this quite by accident while searching for something else. No intention of bidding on it, just curious. I ran the cert # through PCGS and everything checks out. What doesn’t check out is the date on the coin. Counterfeit slab? Label looks good to me and the typography is spot on. Counterfeit coin? If so, it’s a good one. I found a couple of details that raised minor doubts, but without higher res photos I don’t know if they’re real or just my imagination. And if it were counterfeit, why put it in a mis-labeled slab that might invite unwanted scrutiny? Or is it possible PSGS simply made a mistake, and the seller is so focused on the label that he/she has never actually looked at the coin itself? Seller makes no mention of the discrepancy in the ebay listing. Thoughts?
Probably a mechanical error. I have a PCGS $2.5 that is labeled G$1. Take it to an expert if you're still concerned. Good luck.
My advice is pass on this one. 1880 S is going for $45 for MS 62. Buyer only has a 19 feedback and 1 neg. $27.00? Maybe if you take a risk. I don't see this as a 63+ but I've been wrong before. Wait for a better deal.
Could be an error slab. If the coin is the correct grade (63+) probably a typo. The cert number says it is an 1881-S? Retail prices are the same in all grades in my price guide. The 1880 has a lower mintage. And with more varieties than the 81. You would have to message the seller, and ask about the discrepancy.
The only valid price guide today is EBAY. Redbook = 65.00 1881S MS 63. Ebay = Low 44.17 high 99.00. Now find out what a dealer wants. Pass.....even if it's a 63+ there a more fantastic 80, 81, 82 S out there. Just cost more.
