Good luck jacer! Some weeks are pretty dry and you have to resort to looking for the 2002 and up coins or the 1987s. Ever couple of weeks though, you hit the mother load. So far in the last month, I have found 72-90% and 76-40% as well as several 2002 and up coins. Keep hunting.

That is awesome. The sliver value alone is incredible. I like to do this so that one day when times are tough, I can cash these in and get some coin spending money. My wife is already dropping hints that my coin buying days are almost over as we begin thinking about a family. :goof:

In one of my last half dollar roll searches, I found a 69S proof and a 70D. Both appeared to look like someone tried to aritifically tone them. It was a shame. Interesting finds though.

No luck today - the bank teller says she couldn't order any in because wherever she orders them from was out. The funny thing was that she said this to another teller....over the phone! She wasn't in today and the other bank tellers looked at me like I was crazy when I said that I was there to pick up two boxes of half dollars. Coincidently, she called the bank while I was there so they asked her. She told the teller that she will recheck next week for half dollar boxes. What are the chances that she forgot about me? Hmmm. :vanish:

    04/18/2008 finds

Not much to speak of this week but I guess after last week, what can I expect. I found the following:

    Silver finds
    1-1946 Walker
    1-1968-D

    Rare in Circulation

    2-2002-D
    2-2002-P
    1-2004-D

A couple of nice AU coins that replaced some lesser condition coins in my three Kennedy albumns.

Next week another 4 boxes and the possibility of...?

Hi...how and where do you dump 2K worth of halves to have the 2K to purchase your next weeks 4 boxes?

And does the bank you "dump" at give you any grief.....?

    Thanks
    RAH

I'm not sure what you're asking exactly. I have several banks in town and I bring them back to the one with the best counting machine. They all have coin counters but some machines are better than others. If one the machines is down temporarily, I leave the bags and just check the deposit online.

so how is the 2002-D rare in circulation?
I thought it was 2004 and later that they stopped making them for general circ...
    or when was it? lol

You were close. 2001 was the last year they were made for circulation. 2001-P was not issued for circulation but they still made over 21 million of them. The 2001-D was made for circulation with over 19 million minted. The 2002-P was minted at about 3.1 million not for circulation and the 2002-D was only minted to a tune of about 2.5 million agin not for circulation. Dems da facts. :)

Yes...you covered what I was asking about. Banks here have no counting machines...only the Credit Union...which I am not a fan of.

So...I have to re-roll halves I search and take them to other banks around town. The bank I pick my halves up at NEVER want to see them again.

Do you find yourself ever searching halves that you have searched before (I mark my coins so that I will know)

    Thanks

I never mark coins. I know that the bank gets shipments from the Fed and the likelihood that I would get many of the same coins is pretty small. I return loose coins and they are mixed in with other loose coins I'm sure and even though I may get some of the same coins, other coins that I may actually want are mixed in too.

I have been searching boxes of halves for 3 years....started to place a special mark on them by the week, 1 year ago...I keep a "key" of my marks so I can trace them back to which week I searched them....when they come back to me. The last 3 months have been bad...been searching 40-60% of my previously search coins the last 2 weeks. Up until January, I rarely saw one of my previously search coins...I believe the rolling company has changed the way they are doing them and distributing them. Funny thing is.....this past week I was on the road.....and stopped at a couple small local country banks to search for halves....found 1 bank with 10 rolls of hand-rolled halves.....I was estatic.....until I opened them.....70-80% had my marks on them.....this bank was not a branch of my home bank....and completely different bank...and 90 miles away from where I live....

What company is wrapping your coins you search?

    I am in Virginia, you?

    A very lousy week indeed. No silver at all. My only keepable finds were;

    1-2002-D
    1-2004-D
    1-2007-D

$2000 in Kennedy half dollars and kept $1.50. Maybe next week will yield better results :computer:

Moen and Gang - remember my post from last week letting you know that I didn't get my boxes of halves because the lady at the bank forgot to order them for me, well, I guess she didn't forget this week, but I did. She called me on my cell phone to let me know that she got them in. She knew what I was looking for so she tried to get mixed boxes in for me. OK - so here is the break down - four $500 boxes - 13 40% silver (2 1965, 1 1966, 4 1967, 5 1968, 1 1969). Not bad, I guess - I've had better, but I have also had worse too. The lady at that particular branch is willing to work with me, but there were bank tellers at different branches that are not as willing to work with me - they want the silver too. Lets get ready to rumble! :pencil:

Please don't do that. Some of those coins could be used to fill holes in collections. It's quite irritating to find marks on the ears, eyes, rim, etc.

I found a beautiful 1992-P with an ink mark on the ear this week but I simply took an eraser and took the ink off with no damage to the coin at all. I wish that I had taken a picture but the point is that marking coins doesn't necessarily make them unusable.

    Week ending 05/02/2008

Anyway, this seemed to the 40% week. I found the following coins in the 4 boxes I came home with:

    40% silver
    1-1966
    10-1967
    3-1968

    Just rare in circulation
    1-2005P

Better than last week and just enough to keep me plugging along.
