I picked up one of those Celestron mini "microscopes" and decided to take a look at the mm's of a couple coins I've had stored away for the last 10 years. Almost everything I found is in the cherry-picker's or on CONECA except this one... It looks to me like a triple S/S/S RPM. Maybe it's just a S/S and I'm misinterpreting the photos on PCGS, CONECA and Cherry Pickers. I took shots from a couple different angles in an effort to figure out what this thing is...

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks for your help!

I'm not so sure, either. I do see those tell-tale striations signifying die deterioration surrounding the mintmark.

PS. I do like all of the Celestron close-ups except for the one taken at an angle.

Thanks Chris - The Celstron does take some pretty nice close ups. But it isn't ideal for taking a pic of a whole coin, which is sort of disappointing. What I do like about it, is it beats squinting though a loupe for dates/mm's, ect,

Thank you!! I was dissecting that page prior to posting. I didn't see it there and I'm not overly familiar with machine doubling so I asked here where I knew I'd be pointed in the right direction. Now I know it's machine doubling, I found this site that explains how to tell the difference between a real DD and a MD.

I appreciate your help, I feel like I owe you a coffee or something!

The "second step" behind the MM almost look flat, not rounded off like a true DD as shown on the error variety page. I could potentially buy into a DD on the "second flat" w/ "third flat" MD. Take a look at the pic below, there is flat MD doubling on the rock by the MM, but that's not shown on the close ups you posted. This is a great discussion! Does this mean I'm becoming a numismatist instead of an expensive coin hoarder? lol 44S 50C RPM Pic 4.jpg
