I have two questions regarding the use of direct fit AirTites:

    1. Do the capsules touch the coin anywhere but on the rim?

    2. Do coins rattle around in the holder or are they held tightly?

    I love my AirTites.

As far as I can tell, they only touch the rims. That is, unless the black/or white ring of the holder is deformed a little. Then, it might rattle a little bit. I have heard good things about the Direct Fit AirTites, but I personally like the presentation of the coin with a black ring to accent it.

    1. no, it just touches the edges and the plastic case holds in the coin

    2. no, if you get the proper size

Get the ones with the foam presentation ring... I've had a lot of problems with coins getting stuck in the direct fit variety, especially American quarters for some reason.

Airtites with rings. Only way to go. I like the added protection the foam ring might offer if a coin was dropped.

I hate the look of the holders with the rings.

I don't like the look of the airtites without the rings, so go figure. I also have had problems with the direct fit type so I don't use them anymore.

I am another one who prefers the look of the direct fit over the foam ring. I have not had any problems with the direct fit holders, but I rarely remove a coin once it is in a holder. I do use a variety of holders as I have SBAs, Franklins, Kennedys and IKEs in the holders.

    Just my $.02.

    1. Even though they are called direct fit, don't think they are all exactly the size of the coin. For the smaller coins like dimes there is still quite a bit of extra holder around the coin. Basically, it comes down to liking foam around your coin or clear plastic.

    2. Coins can move around in airtites. It takes some energy, but it does happen. You should never subject your coins to that much shock, but if you do they will move. I shook a direct fit and you can feel the coin rattle. I shook an airtite with ring and the coin shifted a lot and compressed the foam leaving a huge gap between the coin and the opposite side of the foam. My point is, don't put a coin in an airtite and believe it's completely safe from harm.

    3. Direct-fit airtites hold pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters, and sac/sba/pres dollars in A-size holders and silver dollars and ASEs in H-size. That means you only need two types of album pages, storage cards, etc for lots of different types of coins. The types with rings span four different outside diameters for the same coinage. This is a small issue, but one I took into account.

    4. I am a beginner at coin collecting so please take my opinion with a grain of salt. I can only offer the data that is easily measurable. The fine folks on this board know infinitely more than I do about how airtites work in the real-world over a long period of time.

For those of you who are on the fence regarding the rings, they do come in different colors if it is the black that you don't like. Depending on the size of the rings, I believe they come in white, red, blue and green. The direct fit always reminded me of those clear hard plastic puzzle cases where you put birthday money in and infuriate your niece or nephew for hours.:hammer:

Are these airtite with the rings appropriate for proof coins? I have proof nickels going back to 1950, and I have to get them out of the self-adhesive 2x2's they're in now. Thanks.

Answer 1. No they are not intruding on the object of the coins.

Answer 2. Not usually, but there is one thing you must know about "direct fit" Airtites. They are not perfectly, exactly, the same size/dimension from holder to holder. That means that a batch of Airtites can fit real tight or a little loose. Thena again they can just right. Don't get me wrong I love this product so much so that I have manufactored my own displays for them. The displays holes are cut to allow a press fit for the Airtite. Some times the coin will turn inside the capsule sometimes not. But it's not problem because I can easily remove the Airtite and straighten the coin when I know I'm going to show the set.

I like the foam rings but do not own any because of the cost factor.

The pictures below are of a prototype display. I like the Airtite because if is ever scratched I can replace it at a very low cost. Compared to Capitol holders which are nice but very very expensive for what you get.

Thanks for the complement. I hope to do some serious business with this concept one day. My plan is to make custom holders for any coin in any type Airtite, in any fashion or pattern the customer wishes. Thats the plan.

If you could do some work for a drawer/shelf insert with suede or velvet fabric holding coins in airtites vertically, and paralell with the long way of the drawer...that would be great

I like the ring Airtites, they offer about the best protection and yet they're super cheap.
