But, on the bright side, I'm not seeing you try to say this is a MS65 coin, so baby steps.

Glad to help you learn, always. No offense intended. Like I said... "Very rare coin."

No one said anything about melt. We gave you honest answers as to the condition of this coin. It is very rare, only 20 minted and the survival rate is less than that. Unfortunately the coin has several areas that lowers its value and we are just pointing them out to you.

Mintage is 569. Retails for $19k in Poor1 condition. Realistically, this coin if in a VF details holder would probably fall in the $5000-$10000 range.

Thanks for the correction. I looked it up but I must have been reading without my glasses. Not really sure what I was reading.

The coin has VF detail in most areas, but I think it has had a lot of “tooling” done on it. It may have been holed and plugged, and I think that some of the surfaces have been smoothed. It’s been cleaned. But having said that, it is the #1 U.S. silver type coin. It would not surprise me to see this sell for $20 to $25 thousand if it were to be put in a “genuine” NGC or PCGS holder. You won’t get the full value for this piece if it is not certified.

I have one in a PCGS Fine - 15 holder. I’ll post a photo when I am able to do it.

wow, cool coin. It looks like its already slabbed(?) Isn't that a prong from about 7-9 on the obverse?

Since it seems to be offered from Ohio, I think it is super unlikely it is the OP's and strange that the OP got offended at it being not confirmed as AU.....

Ahh, and this is why CoinTalk needs you. Yours is the 16 star, compared to the 15 star in the OP. I can't seem to find yours in Amato. Do you know what number it is, or is it unlisted?

Every f-vf details coin I’ve found a record for actually sold between $15-30k. I looked to see if there was any record for this coin. Realistically it’s a VERY rare coin with a huge list of buyers as you can’t complete a us type set without. I’d be happy to own one in any condition

Oddly enough, this one is also unlisted in Amato, as far as I can see. There are a lot of problems on this coin. The asking price is about twice what I'd expect it to be worth.

Turns out I was grading VF based on wear of a draped bust quarter, not half. The two wear differently. So this one is a VG details. Still think $15-$30k for that? I still think in today's market 10k is max money.

These don't come up for sale often. But yeah, even in extremely rough, cleaned, repaired, plugged condition... a VG details coin is going to be a $15k-$30k coin. Absolutely, no question.

    Check the Heritage archives: https://coins.ha.com/c/search-results.zx?Ne=1897&N=790+231+370+63+4042&ic4=Refine-USCoinYear-102615

If I could buy a VG graded details 96 or 97 half for $10k, I would instantly max my credit cards and ask if there were any more for sale.

So a repaired VG details 15 stars went for $23k in 2006. The market was much better then. I would think with this one being much worse in terms of problems as well, it wouldn't touch $23k. But who knows?

+1. Same here almost played a few years ago on a fine details cleaned quarter for $10k. A half I’d have jumped on

This the cheapest one I could find in the last 3 years my reception is awful as I’m sitting 25 feet from the ocean with a beer in hand

    What is “Amati?”

With respect these coins, as type collector, I have lumped the 1796-7 coins together in my mind since there is no way that I would ever collect these coins by die variety or even date. If the situation had ever came up when I was a dealer to get into the details about these coins, that’s what reference books are for.
