Is it common for PCGS to claim a coin is counterfeit if it is not. I doubt this 1980 ?

First question - What does the Obverse of your coin look like?
Second question - What makes you believe the coin in question is counterfeit.

People will counterfeit anything. Even common Lincoln cents. The one you posted looks bad enough that it might have been someone just playing around with molds.

Based on your question, can we assume that you've already sent it to PCGS, and are thinking of trying NGC? If so, I'm pretty sure everyone will recommend that you don't throw good money after bad.

Why do you think that coin is worth slabbing?

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

I am concluding that you have little knowledge of collecting errors and varieties, and I further suspect that you know very little about numismatics as a whole. Otherwise, you would not be considering submitting this worthless piece of junk for grading to any reputable service.

Please explain why you think this should be slabbed and why PCGS thinks it's counterfeit. Welcome to CT.

I am obviously not welcome. You are a negative person whom likes insulting people with HELP. Thanks anyway
I have noticed that many unknown error coins are returned as counterfeit on there first trip to grading. I just need to know who is the best at determining if a coin is real? They also need to take the time and have the technology. Thank you for your time and response.

I hope that you grow out of this phase you are stuck in. Maybe move to a happier state. You should call yourself the "Numismatic Nimrod"

I have a counterfeit quarter. As to why someone would do this, it could be a poor country, and while these might only cost a couple of cents each to produce in volume, someone is making money off this transaction.
The OP's quarter just seems very circulated.

@captmorgan282 I would still like the answers to the questions I asked:
    1) What does the obverse look like
    2) what makes you think that it is counterfeit

Wait a second captain the coin is not worth grading in the first place. You have asked a question and had many more responses that you haven't replied to.
How about some better photos and include a photo of the obverse.

I see a beat up circulated coin.
Which certainly could be mostly DDD
But without an obverse photo we have no idea if it is a fake.
This certainly isn't a coin to get graded.
It is as Chris called it.

Maybe you should participate a little instead of taking the responses personally. You might actually learn something.

PCGS claimed it as Counterfeit on my order results. I have not received it back yet. I took this coin to my local shop for an opinion and they wanted me to send it to ICG.I already had a platinum sub with PCGS. If the mint created this coin then it deserves to be preserved in a case
I received a Counterfeit opinion on my order that is still at PCGS. They are sending it back, without slabbing it and charging me $65. I just hope they have a real diagnosis. The obverse picture is with the reverse picture. You must click on it. Thank you

Coins that were returned as counterfeit, then later acknowledged as errors? I've never heard of that happening. Can you show some examples?

Any of the major third-party graders are likely to have better knowledge of counterfeits than any of us. They know of markers that aren't public knowledge (because when they become public knowledge the counterfeiters can fix them). They also see a lot more coins, both real and fake.

I’d also need to see the obverse, but I agree the reverse doesn’t look good. It has a cast look to it. I believe PCGS.

Your pawn shop is only suggesting ICG because they encapsulate counterfeits.

I hope you don't mind, I've posted the obverse here since others are having difficulty finding the image.

I’m not sure I see a mint mark. There should be one. That, plus the surface appearance could be why they called it counterfeit. Are the weight and diameter correct?

Thanks LakeEffect, I didn't see the Obv.

That one is definitely pretty crude example, even for a counterfeit.

Getting an unessesary charge for a coin that should have never been graded is exactly why we have an error coins/What's it worth forums.

The coin posted was never intended to be a doubled die. If this happened to be real. The doubling and distortion would have been called a deteriorated die.
It still wouldn't have made the 65$ price for grading.

We are hear to help, some of us can be more blunt than others at times. But the OP to a thread will always get the truth.

Please don’t waste your money by continuing to have this coin slabbed.

Price guides indicate any 1980 Washington quarter would not be worth slabbing unless the coin is MS67 or higher. That coin is a waste of time and money.
