I have never been one to venture outside of my safety zone of US coinage. Then I saw this whole lot for $30. I did my bit of research and felt it was a good deal, if anyone has anything to add to my knowledge let me know. Some in rough shape, and I’ve never been one for taking good pics. They were silver, and I liked the way they looked. Especially the balboa
That panama balboa is the one that tickled my fancy. The other have history, but are in rough shape. 200+ years of wear and tear will do that. I’m happy with them.
Looks very nice for $30. I believe the 1854 Bank of Upper Canada half penny is a copper token. I think the Spanish silvers should be worth quite a bit over metal value.
There is no Panama Balboa in the group. A Balboa is a crown size coin. What we are looking at is a 1904 25 Centesimos Panama coin. It is roughly equivalent to a U.S. quarter. "Vienticinco " means 25. Most of those are small coins : a GB 3p and 6p, Canada 5 c, 3 10 c, a French 50 c, a Panama 25 c, 2 Spain or Mexico (Mexico was a Spanish colony then) 1r. The largest is the Charles IV but we don't see the back so we don't know the size. It's at least a 2 r but could be a 4 r. That is based on the photos. IMHO, based on the condition, the seller did a little better than the buyer. However, I might have bought the same group.
Panama coins made before about 1930 are 2x the equivalent US denomination in silver. The 25 centesimo is essentially a half dollar.
Old silver ones or newer non-silver ones? I'm thinking newer ones, correct? The newer non-silver Balboas are smaller than the older silver ones.
You can easily cover your cost with 2 coins, the 1904 Panama (~$20) and the 1898 Canadian dime (~$15). Good buy
