    I'm surprised.

I'm also surprised you do well with these assortments. Most of the people cutting up mint sets are cutting out all the gems and some don't leave much of anything good. I guess some people are cutting just a few sets for specific coins.

Most of these cut up sets end up in circulation or in the denomination sets built by the big retailers and the TV shows.

I don't recommend investing in any coin. I do it myself I guess but wouldn't suggest anyone else do it since it's very risky. I also would rather spend $84 worth of shoe leather looking for one of these to buy for a song than pay $84 for one someone else found.

I also know I need to curb the enthusiasm sometimes.

It is a free country Cladking and I did not mean to insult believe me.
MS67 IS a lofty grade but how many more may still be out there.

I've been working in a coin shop for a grand total of three days now. Yesterday a guy came in with about 20.000 wheats. I know, I ran them through the counter.
Then he had a box of memorials. Many in originial shotgun rolls includnng 1974. He was offered 60 cents a roll. I would have given a buck for those rolls but it's not my shop so I watched them walk out.

Yes, modern coinage does get "ignored". I would have gladly sold those rolls for $2 or more and gotten it but like I said not my shop.

Wonder if there were any high grades in there?

Just out of curiosity I got a hold of a few rolls (7 or 8) of linciolns a few years ago and went through them looking for the best example. I did find one that I found to be significantly better than the others but may not be a 67.
My question: is this coin from a mint set or a roll, I'd bet it is from a mint set.

just for fun track down a dozen rolls of 2008 lincolns and see if you find an ms 67 (good luck).

There are some gems in '74 rolls and this is even more common than the '79 roll. '74-P's in mint sets come extremely nice quite often. About 4% are gem and many of these are choice or superb. I still like this date in the highest grades since it's not as common as you'd think with so many gems around. All the mint set coins are large dates and there might be some real opportunity with the small dates in gem. These are important coins made at an important time but they rarely even get mentioned because they are common. I'm not so sure they're all common in gem. The "S" mint isn't even readily available in rolls though it too comes nice.

clembo - circulation coinage grading 67 is not something you just go out and find - they simply don't exist in any meaningful numbers. Yeah , I know, people say that with all those they struck they simply have to exist ? OK, why ?

The mint absolutely does not care whether their coins are of a quality like that. They make no effort whatsoever to strike high quality coins. They merely try to strike as many as they can as fast as they can. Circulation coinage is produced at a rate of about 20 per second. Read that again - 20 per second. They don't exist pal, they never have and they never will.

I went and looked in my safe, I have about a dozen bank wrapped memorials with tails/tails.....wonder if I should open 1, I imagine they are all the same date

...Tough call without a lot more information.

Rolls of cents tend to be all from only a few die pair with just a few odd balls once in a while. There's a strong tendency for varieties and gems to "bunch up" in distribution. If there's one in a roll then there will usually be more. If these were solid date rolls with one that stood out head and shoulders above the others then it was likely a roll made for circulation. A well made coin can just happen to ride the top of all the hoppers it goes through and come out nearly pristine.

There are some specific coins in mint sets where it wouldn't be overly unusual to have one coin stand out in a group by mere chance or a long shot. Something like '70-S nickels come exceedingly nice on rare occasion and finding one in a roll wouldn't be that surprising if it were assembled from mint sets (~1: 30 rolls). The '69 cent is a little this way as well. Certainly rolls of '79-D cents tend to be all junk (a few choice coins) from mint sets.

A good rule of thumb is that if a coin has a crisp strike from new dies it's probably from a mint set. Of course all very high grade coins are crisp strikes from new dies so the rule of thumb breaks down here.

With some dates and some coins I'd agree that there probably isn't a single high grade coin in existence in rolls. This applies to many of the cent rolls as well. Even though there are lots of rolls it doesn't mean there are any high grade coins in them. Then there are coins like the '69 Washington where there are virtually no rolls.

But some dates come quite nice in rolls. Very high grade coins will still be elusive but if you happen to find the right rolls you might come up with several. You can't prove it by me but there are many people who claim some Ikes are actually easier to find high grade in rolls. My experience is that all gem Ikes are scarce and I've never found a single one in rolls. But then I don't look at many Ike rolls since my luck has been so poor.

If you're more interested in clean surfaces than great strikes there really are quite a few coins that are more easily found in rolls. Some mint set coins are nearly impossible with clean surfaces and every year they make at least a few coins that get to the banks with clean surfaces.
