The garbage coming out of the US Mint will stop when the real coin collectors stop recognizing them as required to complete sets. The collectors drive the mint more than they think. If we don't want it there is no incentive to make it. Because, at the end of the day, if you have no hope of turning a profit, the big dealers will not invest. The collectors drive the entire process from beginning to end.
So why doesnt the Mint just contract @dcarr to make them. He's probably going to make them anyways, and his would look better as well.
Why doesn't the US Mint manufacture Morgan dollars with the current date and sell them to collectors?
If there is a 2021 dollar of any mint, DC will not strike any. IdI love to have a 1878-O Morgan, but he won't strike one because Morgan Dollars were struck in 1878. That's how he stays out of the SS's sights.
In 2006, the mint pinched off the "Old Mint" commemorative dollar with a caricature of the Morgan reverse barely worthy of silver plated "tribute" coins. The quality of the 2021 coins must be not only far better than this, but also better quality than what the Chinese currently make. 1964-dated models are available for the mint to digitize much as they did for the 2009 UHR gold. Make a coin worthy of my money, and I'll buy it.
Somehow I have to say that I am getting jaded when it comes these new mint products. But look on the bright side. At the least the U.S. Mint might be the first to make a 1921-CC Dollar ... before the Chinese.
Yes, but too many of them are not coins. When it comes to coins every one should be available to the public without a premium. I agree that the proof coins and mint sets should carry a premium. But, you should be able to dollars and half dollars without buying large quantities of them. Or, the mint should just quit making them.
The CC Mint is striking a 1870-CC half dollar on Aug.1. It's .999 silver and has "copy" stamped into the obv. It's a fund raiser for the CC Nevada State Museum and will be struck by press # 1, which struck most CC coins. The price is $150, and includes dinner at the mint. I,ll not want the half, but would love to own a new legal tender CC dollar!
And I’ll take it. I honestly hope many others feel the same as you about this offering as it’ll cut out some competition.
Seems to me there should be a different perspective on such offerings. Instead of thinking of them as coins to be collected, I would consider them as medals or tokens to be collected. Thus, true coin collectors would be those who don't buy them, while those who don't care about how coin-like they may be, can buy them as collectible medals or tokens, or just nice, fine, art pieces. Say it's just another Franklin Mint production.
For me, the quality of the coin will determine if I am interested or not. With digitizing such as it is now they should be able to produce an excellent product. If they don't, then I definitely will not be buying one.
If they did they would put them in such large minimum lots that big business can make bigger money. The best thing is for those who don't want them to treat them as if they were just trinkets. Do nothing to draw attention to them and other ballast being pushed on us by the mint.
You’re overthinking this. There’s no need to try to make this offering make sense to everyone. If you’re a medal collector and want one, then buy it. Same goes for the “true” coin collector. Your collection is what you make of it, and I think collectors today are branching out into several niche areas of the hobby. But make no mistake. This will NOT be a Franklin Mint product. Sure, it’s not the same exact thing as that original run of Morgan dollar mintings, but it will still be a legal tender Morgan dollar minted in 2019 by the US Mint- FAR from a token. The Mint doesn’t push anything on us. Don’t want it? Don’t buy it. Simple as that.
What you say is true, Ike. I'm disgruntled because after more than 70 years of collecting I see the hobby being directed by big dealers. Just one example, I can't continue my half dollar collection unless I pay a premium. Otherwise, yes you are right.
