I know, I know lol. But at least try to come up with a modern classic. To just default to the Morgan is lazy & disappointing.
Well to be fair this idea isn’t coming from the Mint. Congress decides what coins get minted via legislation.
Come on guys, that’s kind of cool: “An unspecified number of Morgan dollars (...) would be struck with the CC Mint mark at the former Carson City Mint in Nevada (...) The production would likely be executed on a coinage press hauled from a current US mint production facility.” Let’s just hope the coins will have the correct weight and diameter.
I would definitely buy them. I hate moderns but that's something I could get behind on a modern. And most modern new designs kind of suck IMO, so I'm good with the classics
I went to Congress.gov but the text of the bill hasn’t been posted yet. Once it is we will know the specs for the coin.
I can't stand the mint offerings with 'surcharges'. First they overcharge us with the initial price and then they add a surcharge to add insult to injury. Another money grab. Another opportunity for the mint to screw things up for collectors.
I was immediately reminded of a scene in Isaac Asimov's Foundation. The First Foundation was sold to the emperor on the assumption that it could preserve existing knowledge and shorten the Dark Age. And it could; and it did. But the key point was that the empire was already crumbling as evidenced by the very fact that the idea of preserving the past was an easy sell.
Again to be fair to the Mint they don’t create the surcharges. That’s included in the legislation passed by Congress & signed by the President. If you’re going to blame anyone blame Congress!!
If I remember correctly the emperor was more of a figurehead. There was a group of nobles that were really running things. That’s who was “sold” the idea of preserving knowledge with a set of encyclopedias lol
It had better be 38.1 mm. Actually, I think the composition will have little to do with the popularity of these issues. I'm fairly certain these will be silver, but imagine if they made Cu-Ni clad Morgan and Peace dollars for inclusion in a special set. Uh oh.....
