The star grade is more about eye appeal, than being close to the next highest grade. Generally + grades are used for “close but no cigar” grading. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/957/ If you ever see an NGC +* coin, in a series you collect, buy it, and ask questions later. lol
While plus stars are fairly scarce, I’ve still seen some that weren’t super deserving. A few years back there was a plus star Morgan that sat on eBay for a while (at a bit under $300). I kept thinking about it, but never pulled the trigger as it had a prominent finger print. Someone eventually did buy it.
I had an 1881s rainbow toned MS 65 +*, that was beautiful. When I sold 200 of my toners about 5 years ago to pay for my son and daughter-in-law’s wedding, that one sold for $1004. It was beautiful, but I thought that was Mars money.
Do you still have a picture? That actually seems reasonable compared to what I’m seeing some mediocre Morgans selling for in today’s market.
I have it somewhere. Will post it when I find it. Really pretty coin. It has been posted here a few times.
