I got an interesting private message on Collectors Universe last week...

Here is the message I received.

So what do you suppose I did?

I took a dollar bill out of my wallet and mailed it off to the address in the message, of course. I mean, how could I not, right? I was intrigued.

I then forgot all about it.

Then, in the wee hours of this morning, "Rick" tipped his hand and let the cat out of the bag.

So he explained, and told me what it was he sent.

I was utterly surprised, and now I wish I had sent him a silver dollar at the very least.

The coin he is sending will probably arrive today, and I will be very excited to receive it.

Care to guess at what it is?

    I'll drop a few hints.
    • It is an older United States coin.
    • It was made into a love token in the early- to mid-19th century, judging from the style of the engraving it received. (My benefactor knows I like love tokens).
    • The obverse was planed off before it was carved, so there is no date, but there are diagnostics on the reverse which make the host coin datable.
    • It is worth quite a bit more than one dollar!
Will post pix when it arrives.

Speaking of interesting love tokens, this is not the coin I am receiving- it is on eBay- but ... wow.

Really cool. Some strange things go on over on CU. Some crazy fun folks over there.

As I said, the 1825 quarter-eagle love token above is not the coin I'm getting.

Below is the seller's picture of the engraved side of the piece I'm expecting today.

Pretty standard 19th century engraving. Script initials. That's common. The style is early- to mid-1800s. Probably pre-Civil War.

    Not the best pic.

Usually with love tokens, it's all about the engraving.

But as you can see above, the engraving on this one is rather mundane. It's decently done, in an early style, but not all that unusual.

In this particular case, it is the host coin that is interesting.

    The coin is silver.

That would mean a quarter or a half. This is smaller.

    (Good guess, though.)

Smaller than a quarter or half with useful reverse diagnostics ... seated liberty dime?

You got one of those (the type or the denomination) right... but not both.

In other words, it is either Seated Liberty but not a dime... OR... a dime but not Seated Liberty.

No, but I did own a fun pictorial love token done on a trime, once.

And if it had been a trime with the obverse planed off, there is one date that could still have been ID-ed with the obverse gone: the 1851-O. I have never owned one (unless the coin here was one, and the "O" mintmark got wiped out when it was "chickened out"). I have always wanted an 1851-O 3cS.

But this coming love token is an even better host coin than that.

My instincts tell me a half-dime is too small for a token, so it must be an early dime ....

    ...BUT...

... on the other hand, maybe that's just what you want me to think, and the piece is interesting precisely because it is a half-dime :)

I'm going to go with the latter, a seated liberty half-dime.

    (It's probably neither :bag: )

^^ I would like a 1851 O trime, but alas, will just have to settle for this one. Should reach me today in the mail.
