The problem is there's not guarantee though. They don't even guarantee the authenticity of ancients that they grade and slab so I would expect a whole lot of I don't knows for those.

Honestly the opinion spreads are so wide (Like real/likely fake/I dunno and 1-35/40-58/60+) that any collector who can't put coins into those categories accurately on a consistent basis should just stay away from raw coins entirely until they can

I 100% agree. I bought my first Doppeltaler online from just photos. I felt pretty confident, but when for $10, I could’ve gotten the peace of mind that it was most likely genuine and in the grade range I thought it was, I’d have probably paid it. That’s less than 1% of my acquisition price. Much better than buying something bad and then having to worry about selling it.

And this brings me to why I think this is such a good idea @micbraun . It might help drive down prices and drive out fraudsters on eBay. But even if it doesn’t, it could help a lot of people without enough knowledge make informed decisions without having to research. People who should not be buying raw coins do it anyway, often buying junk and then losing far more than $10 on the sell. Obviously the easy answer is don’t buy if you’re not able to tell, but that doesn’t stop a lot of people. This service can give that lacked knowledge. This may prevent a lot of people from unknowingly buying fakes and details coins. I think this service can do a lot of good. I look forward to hearing more experiences. The only two I’ve read so far were both positive.

I don't think this service is intended for those common pennies, junk silver, common circulated morgans. It makes no financial sense to pay $10 for something worth so little. I would think this would be utilized more for something thats expensive and unslabbed.

But isn’t that the problem? Those are the coins where decisions can lead to huge value swings but they won’t guarantee anything and have a highly wide range.

What happens when they say likely fake, does eBay remove it and they’ve now interfered with business for an opinion they won’t back up in anyway?

The TPGs have a lot of value, to me this discredits the one doing it.

Straw man argument fallacy. Anyone can report anything as a fake. This changes nothing. NGC does not provide anything tangible to the customer with which to report it, and NGC does not report the coin themselves (at least it’s not listed as a service they provide).

I think I’ll take it one step further and add a link to the service to all my new coin listings on eBay. So potential buyers can have NGC’s opinion on the authenticity of my coins for only $5 each.

If NGC worked with the seller and certified the coin within the eBay listing itself, they would only get paid once per listing.

By working with the buyers instead, they can potentially look at the coin photo one time and charge multiple people for doing so.

Personally, I got burned twice recently buying cleaned and polished early Lincolns. I could have used an extra set of eyes to look at the intentionally poor photos and warn me off.

I like the idea and I hope it works in the long run. It would be great if Ebay used experienced coin people to help weed out all the obvious fake coins that are being sold on their site.

My personal concern is with authenticity
