  3. Decided to get halves today after I cleaned out my local banks of all their nickels. Got 2 BWRs, 8 Loomis MWRs, and 15.50 in loose change. I finally found my first proof coin 1979 S. Take a look.

Had a near miss at my dump bank this morning. I sometimes use a large zippered cloth bag and when stuffed, it holds around $650 in halves, which it was in this case. The teller came back from the machine and told me the total was $582.50. I asked her if she was sure because a full bag should have held more. She was very polite and went back and verified that the display showed $582.50. After she counted out my cash, I could tell that it bothered her, and she offered to go back and check the machine again. She found $72 in halves that somehow did not go through the counter! She apologized and gave me the extra cash.

I don’t count my coins prior to dumping, it takes too much time. But I do know approximately how many coins the 3 different size bags that I use will hold when full. The lesson here is to question the count if it seems off. $72 freaking dollars! That’s enough to wipe out the gains from a really good box. Happy Hunting and be careful out there!

I deposited $700 in hand-rolled halves at one of my dump banks yesterday. During the transaction the head teller came over to the teller window and offered to provide me with bags, zipties, and tags that read, "$500 HALVES", so I would not need to roll, and she would not need to unroll and count, the halves included in my future deposits. She simply asked I ensure I put exactly $500 in halves in each bag.

Obviously, I took her up on her offer and thanked her. Oddly, the bags she provided me with are the old-style cotton cloth bags with the bank logo. Now I feel like a bank employee, ha.

I will pick up another $500 order of halves at a different bank Friday, then I think I will take a break for a few months...Finds are pretty dismal.

I feel your pain @berto ! I would take a break for awhile myself except that it was such a pain to get the various banks to consistently order for me 5-6 boxes of halves per week!

Yep, you are locked-in given your standard orders are in place. The standard orders are now a blessing and a curse.

One bank I use for ordering is happy to place a standard order of as many boxes of as many different coins as I want. They are even willing to accept the searched coins. But, I am unwilling to commit to a standard order given the dismal finds, and am not willing to order and dump at the same bank no matter how accepting the bank may be. Dumping at my usual dump banks is working for now, so I'll stick with them.

In reality, I know for a fact the coins from all the banks and credit unions in my town are mixed at the local coin sorting, rolling, and delivery facility, so in reality, my ordering and dumping at the same bank would not negatively effect my "find rate"...The primary problem remains that my find rate is dismal because the silver recharge rate into "the system" is very low. I need to take a break for awhile.

Best to you and all the other die-hard searchers out there!

Been an interesting 24 hours with quarters. Yesterday, received my first W quarter (Lowell) in change from a vending machine. Today, received a 2016S Ft. Moutrie in change from a convenience store. It only grades AU but I stuck it in a 2x2 just in case its the only one I ever find in the wild.

Penny box hunt today yielded 11 wheaties and 8 Canadians (all modern). The only pre-war wheat was this 1929 Philly.

When is the last monster box of halves that we have seen here? As I recall a monster would be 100 silvers or more. I used to see them about two years ago but haven't seen in awhile.

@Bman33 I'm afraid those days are either gone or becoming increasingly more rare.

I wish I could have seen one of those beauties!

I think you're right. Essentially you're waiting for someone to dump a large collection of old coins in a coin counter at the bank. The most I ever pulled out of one box was 34. 31 were Walkers though!

Bought a box of quarters and a box of pennies. Nothing in the quarters. There were some 2019 D's but no W's. The pennies were mostly new 2019D's, about 60% 2019d's. Only 3 wheat's did I find.
