Of course I would prefer to see eBay employ someone to skim all postings and flag 'Likely not genuine' items with the cost of that service being deducted from the proceeds of sellers who do not delete the listing. I applaud the use of 'likely' since they are working from photos. I will be interested to see how many sellers of ancients use this service. Either way, it will cut down on what I buy from eBay listings since adding $5 to what is already overpriced makes no sense. I still suggest buying coins from trusted dealers whether they sell on eBay or not.

Has anyone seen a first use of this?

I would pay for such a service for venues other then ebay. I like bronze and have to skip so many coins since I am unsure about 'strengthening of details' and 'gentle smoothing'.

Biggest service ebay needs to provide is a “Block Seller” so I don’t have to see any of the sellers listings in searches.

One particular seller that lists thousands run of the mill Medals in the ancient section needs to go.

I don't think I could agree more with that. It actually kills a lot of sales on eBay. I get tired of sorting through the BS listings and just don't bother most of the time.

For those wondering, there is a way to exclude sellers in your eBay searches. One needs to go to advanced search settings and scroll near the bottom. There will be a box where you can change from include to exclude and type in the seller’s username.

Here is a link with an image:

But is it permanent or can it be bookmarked so it stays excluded?

After you run the search, I believe you can save it and come back to it. I’m not 100% positive though as I just do the process manually when I need to exclude someone.

I think this is a great idea especially for ancients and world coins in which a majority are unslabbed.

An NGC opinion isn't worth $5 for me but hopefully it will cut down on the number of fakes on eBay. Hopefully it might also be good enough for some people that they won't also feel the need to go ahead and slab their coins to get such an opinion and might change the market for the better that way.

Maybe, if anything, it will cut down on the 'is this real?' posts on CT.

Dreamer! Within a year we will get our first, "My coin was marked Probably Fake. Should I send it to David Sear and NGC to be sure?"

Will it lead to a rule that all coins will have to be screened and the cost added to the fees? Is that good? I'd prefer a screening that would eliminate posting coins for over ten times what it would bring on a good day

Seems like a good idea and a valuable service, especially for new collectors. Photos can be decieving of course.

It would be great if it made some sellers stop listing so many obvious fakes.

If I understand this correctly, there will be a link that will allow a buyer to contact NGC and ask them for their opinion. So I assume that the buyer pays the $5 or $10 and the buyer receives the verdict. So if NGC says a coin is fake, what then? Do other potential buyers learn this?

Let's say there is a high-demand coin like a shekel of Tyre or a tribute penny. There may be 50 potential buyers who want to know whether or not it is genuine? Does each person need to contact NGC and pay them $5 to find out? Pretty clever arrangement for NGC if that's the case.

Another thing to consider is when there are the sellers who insist a coin is real, but, use the service, and it comes back as fake, will the seller see it too and what if they refuse to believe it's a fake and just relist it or something and continue to insist it's real.

Ebay should have a graphic included when the service was used by a bidder, a simple "Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down" with some NGC logo could work, or similar.
