If you don't hold it, you don't own it. The government can confiscate the contents of your safe deposit box anytime they please. If the SHTF, you might not get access you your safe deposit box. When Roosevelt confiscated gold in 1933, gold stored in banks was confiscated. Venezuela trusted their gold to the Bank of England and now can't get it back. Find a solution to safely store your valuables at home. It is the most secure method.
I considered having a substantial safe at home, but went with a small, cheap safe at home for cheap coins and temporary storage of expensive coins, and have a deposit box at my bank for expensive coins. 1. With high res digital pictures, the need to examine the coins up close and personal is rare. 2. Except for a concrete slab, a substantial safe can't be supported by residential flooring without reinforcement. 3. A safe that is highly rated against picking and forced entry and also has high fire resistance would be very expensive. 4. The safe would be noticed by guests, friends, repairmen, house cleaners, etc. Word might get around. 5. A professional burglar would be able to open almost any safe in less than an hour. 6. Finally, if a robber puts a gun to your head or a family member, the safe will be opened right away. I don't want to hear how you'll prevent this with your trusty pistol. Any robber who's willing to shoot is likely to be younger and quicker than you, but most of all, they'll have the element of surprise. Ask Willis DuPont. In the 60's, he had a multimillion-dollar collection in a bank-type walk-in vault at his home. When robbers put a gun to the head of his wife, he opened it wide pronto. Some of the coins still are missing. Cal
This. I'm not willing to commit myself to sitting at a bank of security-camera monitors, weapons at my side, 24-7-365. And I'm sure not going to wager my life or the life of a family member against whatever coins I happen to have in the house. ON THE OTHER HAND, if there's nobody home, a good safe will slow down burglars. And most burglars won't decide to sit around and wait for a hostage to come along -- especially not if there's a house alarm going off. Edit to add: and in response to your point 5, most burglars aren't "professionals" -- a crowbar-proof safe (which rules out a lot of Walmart-level products) will likely slow them down enough to make them look for greener pastures. Personal disclosure: the two burglaries we've had were by very stupid burglars. The first one made off with laptops, including a couple of laughably old ones, and costume jewelry. The second gave up after breaking a window and apparently cutting his hand. Perhaps one day we'll be attacked by a professional. If so, and if he gets past our "bad surprises", I imagine he'll still be disappointed by his haul.
Yes, a good safe will slow down or foil most burglars. But a burglar with experience will bypass alarms and get into almost any safe within an hour. I distinguish between burglars and robbers. Burglars want nothing to do with occupants of a dwelling, and most won't try to enter a house if they think someone is home. Robbers go directly for the occupants to eliminate them or force them to give up the goods. Cal
Yep, and if someone's got a gun to my head, he's getting whatever will make him take the gun away, regardless of what it's stored in. And if I'm going to get shot either way, I'd rather give him the stuff first, so he's not inclined to shoot me and then wait for someone else from my family so he can try again.
You might want to rethink that. Sentry safes are infamous for the fireproofing material they use in the safe walls - it produces excessive moisture inside the safe. So excessive that paper stored inside will even become damp the touch. This is about the absolute worst thing you could ever do for your coins ! Now if ya dig deep enough in their website Sentry themselves even provides a warning about the excessive moisture produced inside their safes. That's one of the reason they also offer to sell you these - as one of their accessories.
I'm aware of the problems with Sentry Fire Flood safe , I use the reusable Desicant and open it often . It's heavy and just sits there on the floor . I did quit storing currency in it for the moisture though , I'm still checking about the OGP & COA for the possible damage . Thank you for your response , I appreciate it . I just love this Group !
