Welcome to Coin Talk. Here's a photo of a real 1964 SMS (Special Strike). https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-1c-sms-rd/3284
Ok, could someone please be more specific about what diagnostic it's supposed to have that it doesn't. Just one.
for one thing it just don't have that smooth shine finish ! it's got the begining of carbon spotting , maybe it stored improperly in any event it would never grade out as sms!
Here is something the clickbait , "get rich from pocket change" YouTube hacks conveniently forget to tell you. 1964 SMS coins were found in the estate of a former Mint Director years later. The were acquired by a prominent dealer then most/all were certified by a TPG. They were not sold to the public in 1964 or released into circulation. If your coin is not in a slab of can trace it's provenance to major auction house in the last 30 years, you have a better chance of winning the Power Ball this weekend than having a circulated 1964 SMS. Sorry to be blunt, but those YouTube hacks usually leave out these "minor" details. Then experienced collectors who enjoy helping new collectors on forums like CT get stuck being the bad guys when questions like this pop up. For fun, ask the YouTube hack for the diagnostics. If you're interested, you can always Google major auction houses like Heritage and Stacks and do a little objective research
keep in mind that many people will not answer a question if that question can easily be researched yourself. What are the diagnostics? That is easily found by doing your own research.
Thank you, everything you said was absolutely right about the coin and the forum, so thank you for taking the time with me. It seems all I ever get are non constructive criticisms. So that being said, I did do my research, and everything as far as I could tell checked out with the sms penny. That's why I was asking if anyone could point out a diagnostic it didn't have. It's a totally different color than my other 1964's. It's not shiny, it has the scratches on the back in the same location. The edges seem different if I'm looking at them right. Liberty is spaced. And the strike appears the same as the sms red on heritage auctions. So I'm with you on the Powerball thing so what am I missing on the diagnostics. They say they don't all have the thing in the columns. I couldn't find anything there. Thanks again.
No one is trying to be negative but just trying to help you out. You seem convinced you have one of the special strike 1964 Lincoln cents when clearly you don't'. Read the following, compare your 64 cent to the details listed on the site: https://www.pcgs.com/news/1964-special-mint-set-coins Your coin does not have that smooth satin like appearance, does not have square, sharp edges, is not highly detailed and sharp, etc. The SP cents doesn't have scratches on the reverse. Read the third line on the site I listed "come without any major nicks or scratches". If you still don't believe us, send it to one of the TPGs. for authentication and grading. Post the results when it's returned to you. I do hope you're not falling for all those BS you tube videos re. these Special Strike cents.
No disrespect but it's not that I'm convinced I have one it's just that when it comes to that satin finish stuff I'll just have to take your word for it. To me these two coins look the same. I can't see the difference. But I by far no expert either. Thank you
Actually I think I do see what your saying on the satin finish. Mine is a bit more shinny and more reflective. It still doesn't look like by other wore out 1964 pennies! Thanks again.
