At Walmart, I pay for my bananas in cash so that I can get quarters and pennies back in change. For the Statehood quarters, I'm still looking for Maine, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands. And for the pennies, I'm looking for several to fill up a Littleton U.S. Cents folder. But today, while looking through the change from the Self-Checkout kiosk, I found this! So, to the person who dropped it back in circulation, and to my Numismatic Fairy Godmother, I thank you!
I too put a lot of buffalo’s out that week. Not one single cashier noticed I was paying them with old coins. Cool find.
Yes, and it reflects the general apathy towards numismatics. Oh well, I suppose that's how it is. After all, it's been more than 2 months since this Buffalo nickel was planted during National Coin Week without anyone noticing and pulling it from circulation again.
Awhile back i gave the young lady at my bank(teller) a 1998 and 2000 Wam. To give to her fav customers. Checked back with her. She did just that.
It didnt occur to me my metal detecting find of a 1903 V nickel this past Saturday could have been from the coin drop. I found a coin I would say was a corrosion free good. It is the oldest coin I've ever found, I was pretty excited until I just read it could've been a plant. Either way though someone lost it and I found it, I've since spent it in hopes someone else will find it and enjoy also.
Did you spend it at a vending machine or with a live cashier. If the latter, did they do a double-take?
it was at my local walmart, the cashier was oblivious. it could've been foriegn and she would've taken it. I am curious how long it will take before someone who appreciates it will find it.
I gave the LCS a roll mix of Liberty Head and Buffalo nickels to hand out to young coin collectors in change that week... made a point that all Liberty Heads were Good or better and all Buffaloes were Very Good or better. Hopefully, that was more effective in promoting the hobby for the youngsters than finding in random change.
I fully agree. When someone who is not into coins find one of your Buffalo Nickels, he or she would probably notice that it's old. But then, they'll just stash it away somewhere as a momento - and will unlikely be motivated enough to start a new hobby. That's what I feel is deficient in the idea underlying the Great American Coin Hunt. Your distribution to the LCS would certainly be a more effective catalyst.
Cashiers don't usually know what they have. As I don't collect modern coins, I've received buffalo nickels, wheat pennies, etc. in pocket change several times during the years, and promptly put it back into circulation. None of the cashiers were ever any the wiser. What I have had happen is cashiers refusing to accept $2 bills, $1 coins, and even .50 cent pieces because they were "fake money." Not surprised at the ignorance, as I live in South Florida and most cashiers are foreign born and usually recent arrivals. I had to have them call their managers and that usually cleared up the problem. The worst I ever experienced was when I paid a fast food cashier with several $1 coins that I had received as change from a parking lot machine. She told me I didn't have enough money, and I tried to tell her they were $1 coins. She got argumentative and said she would call the police. I parked my car, went inside, and asked to see the manager, who then had to explain to her they were $1 coins, and not .50 cent coins, which is what she thought they were.
Believe me, I tried. But this lady got so heated up that I couldn't get anything past her thick skull. At least I wasn't arrested for "fake money" like what's happened to some people trying to use $2 bills. Which reminds me that I probably should go to my bank and get $500 in $2 notes and spend the next two weeks spending it around town at different establishments....just to raise awareness. Maybe I should get a few $1 coins and 50 cent coins while I'm at it just to make it more interesting.
