How do we know it is fake/real?

If you are going to spend $100 extra getting a coin expertised by two services, wouldn't it just be easier to buy a coin from a trustworthy and knowledgeable dealer in the first place? There are thousands of really nice owls out there. Unless you are going for some specific variety, you will have many to consider.

Considering the modified modern grading system employed by NGC (no traditional dealers use the term AU for ancients) you should be able to find a few similar/better ones (some in slabs). Usually we don't see really nice coins sold in bulk lots but here is a group of 23 not considered worth lotting individually that realized several times estimate. I wonder if they were cleaned further by their new owner.

Many popular ancient coins are not rare. Urbs Roma types are often very nice. I am not a condition conscious collector by the standards of people here but happened to have a couple decent ones. They were selected for features not important to most people.

I bought the Athena/Owl from a fellow coin club member who had lost his job and was selling off a part of his coin collection to help pay the bills at home. He guaranteed that it was authentic, he said he bought it from a dealer who he has been dealing with for years and trusted., and as I stated in an earlier post he said if I sent it out to be authenticated and there was any question about the coin he would take it back and return my money. I also bought it because my wife has wanted an Athena for her collection and she really liked the coin.

I was planning on sending it out to NGC Ancients for slabbing all along, but I had never heard of David Sear and I was curious to see what he had to say. Remember, I'm not a regular ancients collector, I have a few in my collection, but I am by no means an "expert" in them. I am curious to how David documents ancients and what he will send me on the coin, but I do know from others post that he does not encapsulate the coin. As I said, different strokes for different folks, if I have an expensive coin, I prefer to have it encapsulated to protect it. Others would rather not, that is their choice and I respect it.

Also with my work with YNs (Young Numismatists) it is safer to have the better coins protected and let them physically handle the less expensive ones. You can teach them to only handle a coin by the edges, but in their enthusiasm then sometimes forget that rule.

I will be more than curious to hear what you think of David Sear's service. Can we expect a followup?

Sure enough, I'll just have to figure out how to get back to this string once I get the results.

Take the $1000 and run! You could buy a nicer example and have it slabbed for that money.

Here's my problem with this coin. The coin looks legit and probably is, but the grading is my issue. Look at the website address and phone number. I've gone to both. If you google the actual website address, it does come up as ngcterms.com, but it the reroutes you to ngc.com/terms (which is what the website address for the terms on NGC.com SHOULD be). If you call the real number for NGC, you get the very sweet & softspoken girl's voice (a recording today since it's the 4th of July weekend) & you can leave a message. I'm VERY good at remembering voices and faces, and I recognize her voice from other interactions with NGC. BUT, if you call 888.NGC.1141 (the number on the supposed grading package), you get another woman with a very DISTINCTLY different voice. She does say almost the exact same thing, but at the end of the message, when she sends you to leave a message, it transfers you to the REAL girl's message, and then THAT message plays all the way through, and THEN and ONLY THEN, can you leave a message with NGC! I'm THOROUGHLY convinced that this is a FAKE GRADING SERVICE with FAKE PRICES placed on these coins, so that the ORIGINAL sellers can sell their coins for much higher prices with FAKED higher grading! Note that I'm not accusing THIS seller of being fake (if, down the road, someone reads this and this link to eBay is no longer functioning, the seller's name, as of now, is: saeng888 on Ebay.com). I'd really LOVE to buy this coin at this price! But I just don't think it's the genuine article. Please note that I do think it is a real 2012 Silver Proof Libertad PF 70 Ultra Cameo, of which only ONLY 4,200 silver proofs were minted of ANY weight that year! I just don't believe that this is the genuine grading! Look around. You can find 2012 Mexico Silver Libertad Proof 1 oz. - NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo's for less than HALF of the price listed here (again, in case this link disappears, it is currently listed for $298.00 US). IF ANYONE KNOWS THAT I AM WRONG ABOUT THIS AND CAN DEMONSTRATE IT FOR A FACT, I'M ALL EARS! BECAUSE, AS I JUST SAID, I'D LOOOOOVE TO OWN THIS PARTICULAR COIN, EVEN AT THIS PRICE!!! THANK YOU!

What coin? Do you realize this thread is 3 years old? If you want to ask a question you have to ask it clearly.

Once you figure it out, start a new thread. If you post them here, they might not get noticed.
