74 in 10 minutes? - that was the winner's tally last year - I'd be full after four or five, not to mention the all day agita :yack:

Boy I suck with my detector (Minelab Xterra 305). So far in multiple trips to the Ocean City MD beach I have found all of three quarters, a nickel, and about 6 cents. What am I doing wrong!!!!???

    7. Follow The Towel Line
The towel line is famous among beach metal detectorists. It's self-explanatory but I’ll go ahead.

The towel line refers to where beachgoers tend to place their towels. It’s above the high tide mark – usually a line of seaweed or other bits the sea has temporarily left behind.

Sun-hungry folks dump their belongings here, apply sunscreen which makes their fingers slippery, and rifle through their bags. Objects fall off and out with alarming frequency.

You’ll find sunglasses, phones, coins and jewellery along the towel line, along with Coke cans, beer cans and tin foil depending on the quality of your detector.

The best way to find stuff is to get to know your detector. Start by takings different things likes different denominations of coins, some bottle tops, aluminum foil and different types of gold (14k, 18k, etc.) Bury these objects and pass over them with your detector. If you can pick up a quarter but cannot pick up a dime for instance try adjusting your discrimination or add more sensitivity. I am not familiar with your machine but those are the basics. And remember Gold is very similar to junk metals and sometimes it pays to dig all the junk for that reason. You can also bury an object at different debts and see how far down you can read it while making adjustments. Another thing you must do and very important is to ground balance the detector. If you are in dry sand and then switch to the wet sand the ground will be different. Some machines do this automatically. I hope this helps you, you can play around in your yard and set up a test garden. Bill

Thought I’d share my “heartbreakers” from this last week.
    1) thought I’d found a gold coin while hunting outside an old cemetery but it’s a Euro
    2) pulled out what initially appeared to be a large diamond ring from under a massive oak tree. Once in sunlight I could see it’s a kid’s ring
    3) pulled this huge ring from a ghetto curb strip. Stamped 18K. Spent 5 minutes trying to find the stone. At home after cleaning I saw the stamp read 18K HGE. High Grade Electroplated.

    Such is life. Keep swinging

Hello Chip, Most of my finds were made with a Whites V3i. But I have also found some of them with my XP DEUS and my Tesoro Tejon.
