Hey folks, working on cataloging my 7070 book, checking for RPMs/ RPD's ect and came across this on my 1883 Shield Nickel. Look to the west of the 1, there seems to to be an arm protruding about one third of the way down the stem of the 1. I've been scouring the internet, Cherrypickers, ect trying to decide if this a real RPM and couldn't find anything. Is it artifact from the die crack? If it is an RPD awesome, if not, awesome too because it's a really nice coin! Sorry for the crap pics, took them on my iphone. What do you think is this a variety or am I imagining things? Thanks for your help!
Can’t speak to the RPM you are asking about. Love your avatar though. Takes me back to a simpler time.
Looks more like the planchet split slightly in that area and the extension off of the one filled when the coin was struck.
Thanks Paddy! I bought it raw, unattributed and threw it in the album. So, I'm assuming I should treat it as a common MS 1883 Shield Nickel?
