I seem to be having trouble with this one. I am trying to buy a few National bank Notes. Now I have about 5 books that im looking through. Why cant I find any prices for these. Can someone give me an idea as to where to look for break downs on these notes. Thanks How may were printed, what they are worth, etc
depends on what book you are looking in. My Freidberg book shows a ton of them ... differne banks, different printings.. diffferent values... and then what series.. 1st, 2nd or 3rd.. series doesnt sound right, but i cant think of the right word for the different 'phases'
Most general references don't cover Nationals in detail because there's just *too* much detail to be manageable. If you really want all the information, you need something like Don C. Kelly's book--this thing's the size of a telephone book, and has print as small as the 'phone book too.
Like Daggarjon said, the Friedberg book has all of the different issues and denominations that were released. The Kelly book gives a reasonable census of how many notes were issued by each bank and the number of $$ that are were outstanding when the banks closed, though there is much more complete census out there....the name escapes me at the moment. To get a sense of pricing (and I mean sense because Nationals are a very dynamic and upwardly mobile area of note collecting) check either Coin World's Paper Money Values or the Currency Dealers Greensheet. Auction catalogs are also a good place to look at what's out there. Lynn Knight, Heritage and Bowers & Marena all have currency auctions on a regular basis. The fun (and frustrating) thing is that any one note may be very common from one bank and rare as hen's teeth from another. And not all banks issued all of the different series of notes. If there's something in particular you're looking for I'll take a look in PMV and the Green sheet for you (as long as publishing those numbers are allowed.) You can also buy single issues of the greensheet online at the Coin Dealers Newsletter, www.greysheet.com
For example, Hawaii notes are rare. Very rarely do you see them. Like for example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200214713098&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=010 And not to gloat: http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=31545
Oh how I would love to be able to afford them LOL but then I woudnt be able to buy anything else for a long time
Oh, but please do gloat! If one can't brag a little about their collection, where's the fun I do wonder how you could forget you had that bad boy $50 hiding in your collection Another resource for finding National pricing and to see what's out there is the Bank Note Reporter www.banknotereporter.com It's a monthly newspaper devoted to paper money collecting. It includes a very complete values insert with retail pricing. Lot's of info, ads, listings of auctions and coin shows. All good places to sniff out that missing link for the collection.
Beautiful collection of world bank notes De Orc! Looking at the artistry on world notes always makes me embarrassed for US FRNs.....they're SOOO boring.
I agree 100%!!! Please do!! when you gloat (or anyone) i get to see some beautiful notes, and you get the pride of owning them we all win when someone glaots!!!
