I really like the old toy coins by L. Chr. Lauer. I got the half penny. Read a nice history about the family business recently. It was quite interesting.
Some various military exonumia that has found its way into my collection: This last one I purchased because of the name and location. It was this thread that first made me aware of these tokens - apparently they were machines where you could customize a token to read whatever you wanted. This young man put his name and rank. Lackland Air Force Base is where Air Force Basic Training takes place however I believe this man was not a recruit but stationed there with Air Defense Command. The rank of Private was not in use after 1951 and Basic Training was at Sampson AFB, NY 1950 - 1956; Parks AFB, CA 1951 - 1959 Parks AFB, CA.
I use an old CD-ROM spindle with two pieces of black construction paper taped around to give that effect. I learned it from forum member Doug Smith, he's in the Ancients section. I like the it allows you to see only the coin without being distracted by the background. Maybe I should make the black bigger...
I've used one of those machines once to make a name and address tag for myself. It cost 25c. The department store was named Times Square in Hempstead L.I. It even had a coin/stamp shop. They had a guy who sold hot pretzels under that arch.
I first saw this wheel machine at the arcade tent of the Illinois State Fair in 1958. The price was a nickel. Since then I have seen many of them - usually at tourist sites. I now try to find different designs on the hub. I also keep any Indiana locations. I don't know if there is a price guide.
My Mother had a few of these in her jewelry box. She would be the Flossie. She let me have them when she cleaned it out.
It came in today and as I thought the plastic film did do some damage to the surface. So I dipped it in some of that crap I have, now it look like clouds in the sky.
