Just for giggles, I put some coins in the bottom of a toaster oven for a few days. The cent in the lower right-hand corner is the "control"
Yup, they're toasted alright! Fortunately, the shield cents are no worse off than before they went in......as evidenced by comparison to the "control" cent. So it appears you did not damage or desecrate the shield cents any more than the day they were released by the Mint.
