in 1830 there were an estimated 4,764,800 Bust Half Dollars Minted 15 Obverse Dies & 20 Reverse Dies were used to produced 23 different Die Marriages. Recut Letters In LIBERTY
Thanks for the info. I was just looking at these. So are you saying to look for one or all of these characteristics in an 1830 to authenticate it? I'm re-learning the hobby so please bare with me. A lot of posts about counterfeits has me pretty concerned. I had forgotten all about that aspect of the hobby.
Capped Bust halves are counterfeited far less frequently than many other types of coins. Therefore, authenticity is not a concern to the degree that it should be for items such as gold coins, Bust, Seated and Trade Dollars and key date coins, among others.
These characteristics can only be applied to coins struck with these particular dies. other dies used in 1830 may display different characteristics. The obverse(seldom practiced..results in overdates) and reverse dies may also have been used to strike coins of/from different years.
Is there a Drooling Smiley and what's the code for it? :drooling: It sure would fit here! :thumb: Ribbit
I've heard that most early silver has been cleaned at one time. Is it possible this is one of the true original ones ? Sure looks nice. Great color.
In the case of this coin it would not matter to me. I really like the looks of it, but it was probably dipped a long time ago.
