Authenticating Silver Pennies. Ken Potter Aug 17, 1999

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Bobs Tavern Arm, Jun 21, 2019.

  1. Transitional errors during retooling, is a reason by Ken Potter as a rare remote reason for the eventual inclusion that there may be a silver planchet. (third paragraph from the top in the article mentioned)

Even a plated cent silver planchet. Drop test for silver, if the silver is plated, it won’t ring. (second paragraph from the bottom in the article mentioned)

This article is on PCGS’s forum.
No die of Gaudens’s Indian headdress LIBERTY cent was released with the highest feather facing left, but we do see one here facing right it seems, on the only side that the stars reach to America-c. Also the on the obv, a doubled S on an attempt by Charles Barber to implement Augustus Saint Gaudens initials on a cent.

These examples take up two of the three 1959 Lincoln Cent reverses with the remaining STATES-S and proof UNITED transitions. One 1959 has the plating on the obv. The other 1959 has obv & rev ASG remnants it seems.

States-S as a die does not bow inward like on the removal, neither does the point stick down that far on the S die. The tops are even, but the images are different. It’s a different die that left the size difference from the S top to the downward point on the upper S end.

If a feather would not be facing left then of course we would see one facing right. We would, that is, had you included the picture showing what the misrepresented/ plagiarized text is referring to. Just where was this post going anyway? have you a silver penny in your collection to share pictures of ?

I'd apologise but this guy has become a daily source of entertainment. Never mind the other reply, it wasn't meant for this post. Unable to get rid of for some reason

It's known as the Dick Butkus variety. Haven't seen one turn up in a long time, nice find.
